Thunderbird Club Pt. II

Thanks for the sound advice!
I agree leaving the 3 point in place is cool, to have it remain as Gibby made it.
And saving money in a crappy economy is always the way to go! :D
The set up Sweetwater did on it does not float my boat, so trying to get it corrected is the plan of the moment.
Problem lies in finding a good " luthier that *knows* how to set up a 3 point".
I only have 3 music stores in my immediate area.
And highly doubt any of them have someone who falls under that heading.
Sooooooooo I dunno? Time will tell, it always does :)

Just my .02 on that Hipshot bridge.

Aesthics alone prevent me from using it on any my basses, it hangs over the center block - no, thank you. It's a fine design effort and as that I don't critisize it. Take the bass to a luthier that *knows* how to set up a 3 point and save the $$$. Lull does my set ups and trust me, done right, a 3 point is an excellent bridge that will do anything a Hipshot does, plus look like it actually belongs on the bass.

This is my '89

Maybe Scott will share some of his expertise.

I am not a huge fan of the three point but these days I tend to leave them be. One thing I do is use shim brass cut to fit the channels under individual saddles if I need to adjust height. Often I'll have the E and G right where I want it and the A and D may be to low, usually the D string. The third smaller stud is for tension, tilt it up and tension increases, I tend to try and keep my bridge level. Not a bad bridge really, certainly better than the tilt-omatic two point. Hope that helps.

Thanks Scott.
The way it is tilted is a bit odd ....The bridge looks like it is nose diving the way the place "set it up" ....intonation is on...Action is ok...no buzz....a little high I guess...
Hard to say honestly...Being a Tbird newbie...
I know this will take a bit of time to settle with.
It is truly unlike any bass I have played and I have played a lot.

The huge body and skinny neck is going to be an mind and feel adjustment on my part.
I played her today and cranked it up and gotta say DAYUMMMMM this Birds will blow things right off the walls...hahahah!!
I loved the tone!!!
Very cool oooooomph for a passive bass!!
I am seeing what everyone means about these.
BAL*S for DAYS!! :D :D :D !!!!

Hoping to hit the music store this evening and at least grab a set of the RN66LD Rotos to switch out the lame strings it came with.
Then will tinker with the set up I guess a bit and give it another rip.

Oh yea before I forget to ask.
What is approved to wax these with?
I mean I have Dunlop 65 cream of carnauba wax and also MusicNomad carnauba wax I use on all my other basses.
But this is the first and only one I have owned that has the Nitrocellulose finish.
I did not want to just slap the wax on it , only to find out it is a no no or something.
Thanks for the help.

A bit of an update if anyones following:

My BlackThunderbird with EMG-SSD's is complete and waiting for some new strings. Pretty bassy, but more defined and not mud.

My Vintage Burst Bird with EMG-HZ's and Tonepump Jr. is almost done. Routed a 9V battery cavity under the pickguard, and will have to make room for the tonepump in the rear cavity. Has a very large range of tones and sounds great...and currently only the bridge pickup is working. I may have broken the neck pickup pot and next time I get to it, I will replace it. Needs some shielding to get rid of buzz but by then it will be ready to go! Very surprised that one pickup could sound so great. Soundclips are coming eventually for both

Here's mine - before and after the nasty neck (re)break it suffered on the way to my house via UPS

OUCH. Who did the fix?

I've had 3 'Birds the past, an Epi, a '90s white Gibson, and a Studio 5. I only play 5vers these days so I picked up the Studio 5 to try to work it in but I couldn't get past the ergonomics of it. The set neck and the slab body didn't work for my, um, non-slab body :eyebrow: I just bought an Epi Pro V, so we'll see how it goes with that one. Anybody know if the Pro V's have the same size pickguards as the standard Gibson 4's? I definitely prefer the white guard to the stock black one.

Fix was done by Mas Hino here in NYC - the bass was a mess when I took it to him, he did a great job! I honestly thought it couldn't be done!

Here's an updated roster, I've added Mikeowens17 and Pharaohamps - 170,171. As always folks gig shots and random T bird pics are welcome, show us your beautiful 'Birds!
