Oh, just wanted to let you know that Mike Lull says 'hi' from NAMM.

And also to tell everyone that his 'birds freekin' rok! Balanced bodies, with both arm and belly contours... Probably the most perfect bird I ever played.

Told him I'm gonna order some Lull pups for my bird next month...

Nice pair of rare birds, and both w/orig mutes! I (like so many players) took off mine from a 63 II (stolen in 78) and a 64 II (still own). I imagine if they had been adjustable (on/off) they wouldn't have been so universally discarded. I still have both copper platforms, one w/pistine white felt pads from 1964! Long live T-birds!

Cool! Has anyone ever made some accurate re-creations of these '60's mutes? Looks like they would be relatively simple. There are options out there for all of the other vintage styled T-bird hardware (even though some may be hard to find at times) but I've never came across repro mutes. Not that a simple piece of foam doesn't do the trick...

Just a quick story...

I was practicing early this morning with my white Thunderbird. I set my 'bird down, and left the room. By the way, I was playing out of a GK combo amp that sits on my gigging speakers.

Anyway, my buddy got his leg caught on the cable, pulling down the combo amp, which roles down the fretboard and body of my 'bird. I was mortified. However, after examining the TBird for a while, it walked away without a scratch. Not one chip, ding, etc. And it sounds fine. I was amazed. I thought at least the neck would be cracked.

Hi Tbird they both date back to the days of the Dudepit forum both are Tbird IIs but some time way back when one received a 2nd nickel pup & it seems to have a crack repair because it has a small bit of black spray on the back of the headstock so I’m guessing it’s covering something evil, the real “II” had a headstock that broken in a few parts then glued back together, my repair guy was telling me it could be made to look less fugly but I left it as I got it, it also seems to have a thinner neck then the other & feels very light, in fact out of the four Tbirds I have it’s the most fun to play,

Here’s my ’68 IV akong side Amp Tech Extraordinaire Mike Nemeth’s then new Tbird I haven’t talked to Mike in while but I’m guessing he still owns it, also my ’77 when it was at Bass NW in WA,

I haven't forgetten it, but it'll be enough work that I'll have to spend some time over my weekend with it ( as opposed to while I'm at work - like right now! :) ) and I'll expect a lot of feedback from everyone as well.

Gigged it! Backline was some sort of really dark ampeg combo. Wished I had my carvin bx500. I am really pleased with the neck, looks and sound of it. For walking and more embellished playing think I prefer a p or j bass. But this guy rocks really well.

Tonally I like that with a little dirt I am all over a kim gordon type sound, which I have never quite hit except on an old grabber. I have a question strings wise. I had considered myself an old rounds person. The bird has newer rounds on it which I could do without some of the clanky overtones, but since this is my cheap bass to bang around in dives, I wouldn't mind experimenting a bit. Anyone play flats or half rounds on theirs? Is it "too dark" for you? I am pretty open to ideas except for tapewounds. Never got along with them, sound or feel.

I have tried flats & never really got on with them. Decided that I would use rounds & foam under the strings if I ever needed that sound. I totally agree with you about the 'old' string. I'm never happy with the sound until 3 to 4 weeks & then just seem to get better. The best string I have used is black beauties in the 110 gauage. As recommended to me on this fine forum. Great tone & you know your hearing a bass - which is the sound I really want. So good on my TBird, my jazz has them now & even considering my p bass.

They're pretty basic and probably could be made but it's unlikely that anyone would want to for any reason other than retro repo. (for looks, not function) :rollno:
Besides, just the thought of muting a T-bird seems absurd!
