Thanks for the compliments and club membership! It's a pretty good bass, can't say it's perfect (I've complained about a few quality issues in other threads) but the feel of the neck, incredible sustain and beautiful finish make up for most of it's shortcomings. I think I have finally "seen the light" with Thunderbirds. Wish I had some gig shots but I've only just recently started playing it live and haven't seen any photos surface yet.

I like the Thundertrons. Big sounding & dynamic. I just use the me k pickup only and enjoy my tone. They came w/ the bass, I got it off the TB classifieds over a year and a half ago so I don't have anything to compare them too.

I'd like them to be just a bit hotter, I keep trying to get them as close to my strings as possible.

Glad to hear it. I have a pair of Thunder'Blades for my current project. There are virtually no third-party reviews on the TV Jones bass pickups, so I'm excited to hear adjectives like "big" and "dynamic". :)

I also have a Thunderbird build in the planning stages, thanks to you lot. ;)

I'd also consider Link Removed there are sound samples on their website.

Eventually I will be replacing my neck pickup with a Max (my bridge pickup is not working nor do I use it).

The B string is ok I think. I don't have much experience playing them and this is my only 5 string. I noticed it seemed quieter than the other strings, searching info on TB lead me to believe setup would fix it and it helped a bit but it's still kinda quieter than the other strings. I read elsewhere that Gibson admitted there was a batch of bad pickups and I'm in the middle of trying to see if they can do anything about it (I think it's beyond its warranty so I might be outta luck) but I do find that the B string sounds pretty good when not plugged in. I've read some things online with people having no trouble with the B string so perhaps some new pickups would be a good idea if I can't get warranty ones (suggestions, anyone?). I also had the initial preamp replaced because it was too noisy. The replacement one is still noisy as well but not as much as the first one. Perhaps the pickups could be playing a part in that, I'm not sure. Does your 4 string have noisy electronics?

I personally think Epiphone did a rough job of getting a 5 string out there because they let out a bad batch of pickups and the bridge design was not well thought out for a 5. The tailpiece section was too narrow for a .130 to fit through easily so I needed to file it wider to accommodate the string. Also, I felt the bridge was situated wrong because the intonation for all the strings was difficult to get right. I needed to move the saddles longer (closer to the pickups) and had to buy some longer screws to allow them to move further (had a thread about this in the hardware/setup forum section). The G string is still not quite perfect because it's run out of plate underneath it but it's close enough to get by. You can see the new silver screws on the A,D and G strings.

All in all, I am mostly enjoying this bass (other issues included the strap button stripping out and it had a rattling nut on the tuning post when it was new out of the box). I've said elsewhere in threads on TB about my dislike of this bass and of Epiphone but most of the problems I've been able to deal with and now I am enjoying the bass more.

I don't usually use the B string (partly because of the music I play and part because the problems with this bass) so it hasn't been THAT much of a detriment overall and the other 4 strings sound pretty awesome. Killer sustain and tone so I've been warming up to it and enjoying it more every day. Definitely have my eyes on those new Classic IV Pros as the next Tbird to win me over and redeem Gibson/Epiphone in my eyes.

Sorry for the sorta rant response to a simple question but I just felt I needed to let it out.

This was Phil Jones bass when he worked at the Gibson custom shop, it is 9ply Korina with blocks and binding. It's owned by an aquaintance now. That's one very expensive, effing rare Thunderbird.

PHILLY! I met Phil when I first went to work for Gibson in 1989. He was one of the few custom shop guys that would let me hang out & take the time to answer all my stupid questions... One Hell of a nice guy and an incredibly talented builder as well.

I got to work with him again years later at Gruhn's (it was his second time working there). The man does some of the best relic work that I have ever seen... Philly Rocks!

The active electronics were loud, but i made mine passive, for a more natural bass sound.
Somewere on the internet i read somthing about the pickup on the 5string, that the pickups are the same as on the 4string, so that means the that theres a 4string pickup on a 5 string bas . That why i asked the quastion.
And if you rase the pickup on the B side?

Here is my Epiphone thunderbird IV Pro, no volume on tone only a killswits just like my blackbird
