A bit of shamless self promotion :) My "Model G" NR powered by a late 70's Dimarzio Model G. I built this bass for stage use it absolutely kills, one of my favorite basses ever, right up there with my real NRs.

My lowly neckplate....and the strap button was actually already placed there from the factory. I had heard from a lot of owners that they were having problems from neck dive so I assume Epiphone got word of it and changed the position.

It almost looks like the plate is on backwards?? It looks like it has an impression of a backwards Epi logo on it.

The new 'Bird. First one I've ever owned actually. Haven't really had a chance to jam it out but so far I like it. Despite what I've heard about the bridge issues I haven't had any problems with it. As long as nothing catastrophic happens I plan on keeping it original. Except for the pickguard........might hit google up and see what kind of replacements I can find. (don't know why but my camera keeps reversing the damn pics)

Does anybody with one of the Gibson SS Thunderbirds have a substandard finish on theirs? Mine is uneven, and shows significant graining on the whole body. Like the wood wasn't filled or sealed properly. Then a couple of coats of the matte black, assemble and ship.

I know it doesn't affect the playability, which is rather good, and for the casual observer the finish would probably look OK. And since I'm having it refinished in Arctic White it won't really matter, but for a $1,500 list guitar from Gibson, it isn't what I would expect.

Mine is like that too, it is the way they were made. It makes them cheaper, and is the reason they cost $1000 instead of $1500 for the long scale Thunderbirds.

From their web site:

finished in a tactile grain-textured Satin Ebony nitrocellulose finish that looks instantly "played-in" and feels great under the fingertips

Hi Mark,

After finally getting myself a real gibby, I feel justified in requesting a membership no please?

The natural bird is my latest addition, in natural, a finish I really like, and have been looking for for a little while :hyper:

The other two are both Tokai's, and both Korean. The white one remains the only bass I have ever owned from new. She arrived fully set and has played spot-on since coming out the box :bassist:

Thanks. I didn't see that on the site. I do like the bass, feels good, plays good, nice clean sound. But I don't like the looks, which is why I'd talked to my luthier before I even bought it about what we needed to do to bring it up to snuff in the looks dept.

Yeah, that line from the web site was a fancy way of saying they cheaped out on the finish...:)

I actually like it though, I don't like glossy finishes on the neck.
