Thunderbird Club

For the life of me I can't understand the stigma of pick playing on a bass. I used to mostly play finger style until I joined Bond Girl where we played Bond songs that Carol Kaye recorded playing with a pick/palm-muting. Now I primarily play with a pick and use finger-style when appropriate for the song. At the end of the day, incorporating a pick has shaped my sound/style dynamically linked with the type of bass/pu's, the type of strings, and the kind of amp/speaker I use. I went from an ok pick player to being really good at it - and I don't play guitar. I never drop a pick (but I do have a back-up pick close at hand) and can cup the pick in my palm while switching to finger-style within a song. That small piece of plastic unlocks expression possibilities.

Note pick with imbedded rare earth magnet stuck to the metal control plate - always there when I need a back-up.

I always struggled with finger picking on guitar, so when I took up bass I played with a pick. Some people kept yammering about real players not using picks but I ignored them[1]. But then there were songs that just demanded fingers ("Stand by Me"), so I started learning, and switched to that. But there are songs that demand a pick ("White Rabbit"). So I work on both and go with what works best with the song.

He's unbelievable, I got a trick from him in his last Bass Player column, using the side of the pick instead of the point.

Try the pick every way you can think of - using point side, top, curve. Try changing the angle so it's not hitting the string flat. Never mind using a pick with serrated edges, etc.

As far as straps goes…..

Finally got the strap loks installed. The strap was originally bought for an ESP LTD F knock off that was red with all black hardware. Sold it when I found the T-bird. There was no comparison but not sure the strap colors go well with the tobacco burst.

Matches the shirt great, and the TBird just fine. But WHERE DID YOU GET THE SHIRT???

I use the thing basically upside down and play with what would the rounded left top side, and with the point pointing along my thumb. Feels natural and the pick doesn't want to spin. I now also drill a 3/8 in hole in the middle to help when my fingers get a little sweaty. It's the "Miles Pick." I was talking with a guitar player a couple weeks ago and they thought that was a good idea.

If I'm not mistaken, was a grass skirt. Optional.

And as if to be so daring, you might add watermelon.

Grass skirt, coconut shell bra - We haven't suggested running down the streets of one's Home Prefecture yelling "Thunderbirds Rule" at the top of lungs in awhile.......Hmmmmmm.
