Here's something fun I saw on the Detroit Craigslist, an 8 string Waterstone bird. Pretty tempted, but I have enough trouble with 4 strings, lol

You're going to need a bigger piggy bank.

Yup. Although, cab-wise, I found Mojotone actually makes cabs for a fair few other companies, and I think a loaded 4x12 from them is only in the $700-800 range, which really isn't too bad all things considered.

'Just got my Epi Classic Pro T-Bird done.
May I please join this outstanding, distinguished, & illustrious club?
As cool as this bass looks, it plays even better.
I got the bass here on TB, w/HSC.
I got the aluminum scratchplate from tolian_soran, in Germany, on eBay.
The scratchplate looks lighter, not as black in person, basically a mirrored finish.
I got the black metal skull knobs from AllParts.
The Hipshot Supertone bridge is available in lotsa places.

Is that a yellow pine precision type bass higher up?

Yes, the black and gold Jazz ('74) was my first bass. 'Bought it used in 1976 for $125. I have modded it over the years. 'Plays GREAT!
The bass I believe you are referring to, is a "JPJ" tribute P, based upon a slab P John Paul Jones had, but with the new P pup, instead of the old single coil P pup.
I believe it is either Ash or Alder. Mr. Atkinson put that together. The slab P bass feels/plays very solid, very "clean" feel.

That would be it, you surprise me, I would never have said ash from the photo but wood can be deceptive.

You've modded that jazz well, it's a looker, I love the black tuners, nice touch, a juxtaposition on a black headstock. I bought my first jazz about the same time, it was a peach

Both the Pro-IV/Pro-V and the Classic Pro IV are neckthrough...

The Classic Pro IV was introduced in 2013 and have had Gibson Thunderbird pickups from day one and 9-ply neck.

The Pro-IV and Pro-V were introduced in 2009, have active circuitry and 7-ply neck (in reality the neck is only 5-ply).

It can be cheaper as there is no duty on solid body basses, but the shipping docket needs to be clearly marked 'solid body bass guitar', I'm told.
But there are other charges that appear to bump it up a bit. Plus the shipping, insurance etc.
But people do seem to do it so it must work out ok. I guess you'd want to be careful with what you choose though.

My little internet based sideline business (in addition to a full time job, playing in two bands, and uh oh yeah... a marriage) is involved with tournament water skiing, slalom course skiing. I build and sell portable and permanent slalom course setups and Australia is a pretty good market for our brand, I ship several courses a year there.

For just an off the top of my head guestimate, to ship say an Epi T-Bird in case and properly boxed and padded, you're probably talking $350 USD-ish FedEx to the customer's door. My guess is no one would mess with it for less than $100-ish for time and labor so you've got that plus the cost of purchasing the instrument. Say you give $250 - 300 for a Bird (preferably) with a case, you'd be looking at $700 - 750 USD (920 - 986 AUD). And that doesn't include any import duties, taxes etc. Not too sure you're saving anything.

It depends on whether an item is covered by warranty or not, eg my former PF500 head. Anything I saved on buying it off eBay US I spent getting it repaired = lesson learned.

Therefore, amps/cabs/pedals are best bought locally. Anything else is bought wherever it can be found at a good price.
