Interesting discussion about using G&L Humbuckers in TBird builds. I will be very interested in the outcomes.
I have a G&L Asat, which has the same fancy electronics and pickups as the L2K, except in a Telecaster Guitar body. Mine has the 1.5 inch nut width and a lovely flamey neck. Here's a pic. I have a Hipshot drop tuner on it and it works really well on this neck and I dressed her up with a pearloid pickguard from a Cabronita.

It is without doubt one of the hardest hitting basses I have ever played even in passive mode. Certainly a bass that was on the gig roster until a TBird and a LP Double Cut muscled in. The pickups are monstrous and extremely versatile, really Swiss Army knife stuff. The active modes are not for the faint hearted- plenty of guys I know with G&Ls don't run them active. The Asat is also the reason I haven't kept any Stingrays, it does that type of sound (and many others for that matter) but "nicer" in my opinion.
As for pickup position- the pickups in my Asat are pretty much in the vintage positions for TB IVs. If you are only doing single pickup I would definitely put it in the TBII position. It will be plenty.
One thing to be aware of with these pickups is that the magnets are incredibly strong. It took me a long time to track down that they were the cause of some inexplicable fret buzz I was getting on a perfectly set up neck (the G&L necks are beautiful BTW- get the 1.5 inch one, if you like TBird necks). I was discussing the issue with the Australian importer because it had me stumped as to why I was getting the buzz and he suggested that I ensure that the pickups were screwed down into the body as far as they will go otherwise they can pull the strings downwards slightly and cause unexpected fret buzz. Screwed then right down- no appreciable drop in output and the buzz went away.

And wasn't Nick Seymour's Midtown just fantastic in the Crowded House concert? Just goes to show what a load of rot gets generalised about Gibson basses.

The one pickup idea may happen, there may be little point in having a pup that gets eaten by the other pup...

OkI don't get all this rotgut talk about THUNDERBIRDS (lol, auto-correct just made that all-caps!)...

Someone enlighten me over here?

Are you referring to the (rotgut) whiskey? It's been around so long that it's now labeled "The American Classic". This is how re-branding works. For generations - rotgut, now - classic… (the label tells you so - it's written right on the bottle!)

+1  L-2000 (system) - all pro - no cons. Wasn't that what Gibson was doing with their more recent exposed-poles pu's in the T-bird?

You are correct sir - Thunderbird wine… actually don't know about T-bird whiskey… (to anyone who has tried it - do I have to take what I said back?) :)

I hear ya! Agreed on all points... I LOVE my ASAT, but it's taken a back seat since discovering Tbirds.View attachment 998336

Very, very pretty indeed! Love those trans burst colours- the blue is also a stunner. All this talk has got me thinking my Asat might get a run with the new band next gig. I haven't used it with them. Funny how us guys who TBirds have chosen like other unusual basses.

Cool basses. As I was writing my post above about the Asat and G&L pickups, I was thinking about the similarities in concept with the 2015 TBird, except of course that the G&Ls have two active modes, as well as a passive mode.

Another point, the G&L bridge works very well and I think would go well with a TBird build.

Hey T-Bird enthusiast! I am looking for a fine Thunderbird myself these days... It could be a Gibson or a Lull T4. Let me know and PM if you have one you want to sell!
Hey T-Bird enthusiastics!!
Can I join the Club now with that real beauty I just acquired this past week-end??? Ain't she pretty enough for you ??? she is superb! The Lull design is much superior in my humble opinion, balances really well, sustain to last forever!!!! Great Tone with newly installed Dunlop Super Bright Stainless steel strings too ! She stands nicely along with the superb Fender Precision AVRI 63 !!! Only light reflections on the pictures, she is in a very, very good condition!!!

:) Thanks! I just looked up 2015 T-bird and saw the GIBSON.COM spread on it - zowie! I don't think I've ever seen such a detailed fact-sheet on an instrument like that before. Even lists the type of glue they used! (Franklin Titebond 50) But, with all of their exhausting details - they list average weight … (body only)!!! :cautious: Considering it is a neck-thru, one wonders how they even came to their number. (2.82 lbs)

So I thought it was active due to the 2 mini-switches … is that coil-splitting for each pu then? Under "Electronics" it lists everything possible about materials/process/dimensions/resistance/polarity etc., but no mention of what the mini-switches do other than "New & Improved Electronics: Increased tonal Versatility, (their capitalization of V) with eight distinct sounds" Gotta love those guys in the copy/ad design dept - must be fans of Madmen.

Buckfast is a 'tonic wine' with caffeine. You'll see shops in Scotland with a 'NO Buckfast on premises' signs on the door. Copying and pasting from wikipedia tells us:

The beverage has entered the popular lexicon with nicknames such as "Wreck the Hoose Juice", "Commotion Lotion", "Cumbernauld Rocket Fuel", "Mrs. Brown", "Buckie Baracas", "Coatbridge Table Wine", and a bottle of "what the hell are you looking at?" It has also earned the unofficial slogan, "Buckfast: gets you fvcked fast". The drink's prominence within the "Buckfast/Buckie Triangle" – an area east of Glasgow between Airdrie, Coatbridge and Cumbernauld – has raised concern. In addition, the glass bottle has been blamed for contributing to litter and providing drunkards with a weapon.

They sound and play great too! The wood on my Lull's fretboard is really pretty as well.
