I haven't played through a Hiwatt, so take this for what it is worth. Around here, some of the best values are old solid state heads and combos. They can be absurdly heavy, but plenty loud and good sounding. Peavey is usually still cheap. Acoustic Control have gotten expensive.

I have read good reviews of Peavey class D heads, and they are not cheap but not out of control expensive.

If you can score a Peavey MK-III head, in any state of repair, get it. They're still fixable, and sound monster. And pretty damn loud...

I *think* so, but it may be marginal. I know you need their longest version for the VP.

I just like the gauges of the SM set- 40-90. I do a lot of bends in some of my bass lines.

OK, this is nuts. When I got the 67, it was in tune so I made some little marks on the tuners(and the bridge). That way, when I put on new strings, and after I take up the 'slack', I just line up those marks and it's perfectly in tune/intonated.

It's possible that this is not entirely true.

Those all seem to be around 48 inches long, which is 4 inches shorter than any of my Bird cases.

I have this Ritter bag that fits all of my bolt-neck Epi Birds but does not fit the VP. I like this one a lot.

It doesn't say but mine is probably at least 20MM.

None of the two soft cases I posted before; the Fame one and the Gator one would fit a T-Bird?

I'd call Sweetwater and see if they'll do 20% off (that seems to be the max on the spot discount) of the Epiphone hardshell case. Gets you to about 90 bucks with perfect fit and Max protect. Unless of course you prefer a gig bag in which case I'll shut up now.

I have both the original Epiphone and a Gator hard case that are designed for Tbirds. I actually like the Gator better. The outside material seems tougher and is noticeably lighter. The Epi case seems to scuff and nick fairly easy.

I'd prefer to be able to carry the bass on my shoulders, but Thomann (or any of the other German Big exporters like Reverb or Sweetwater are based in the US) are closer and less expensive than ordering from the US (no offense meant)

If you want really protective, the Gator ProGo fits the Thunderbird. They're not cheap, but I've been using one for many years and it's gotten plenty banged around the NYC subway and it still looks new. I need to replace mine because I have the old design with the shoulder straps connecting via carabiners and one of them broke. The newer ones are sewn in. Once someone confirms that the newer Icon has at least the same space as the ProGo, I'm getting that. You can literally drive a car over it. Gator has.
