1. I got it right the second time.
2. It was completely unexpected. We don’t normally splurge like this on our anniversary. I didn’t make any hints. I think wifeypoo must have taken note of my serious reduction in bass spending over the last year and decided to do this.
3. We’re in the middle of some remodeling work on the house so I wasn’t able to spend as much time with it as I wanted. Just had time for a quick inspection, basic setup and 30 minutes or so of playing. Hopefully by tomorrow evening I’ll have more time to spend with it and will post an initial review. I haven’t put a strap on it yet but it only weighs 8 pounds with much more weight in the body than the neck, I don’t think it’ll dive at all.
4. I love all three colors they come in and would have gladly welcomed any of them as a gift. But I do have a soft spot for Candy Apple Red and this Metallic Burgundy is very close to that.
I’m no wine snob, but watermelon wine is a bridge to far for even me. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on your NR vs your VP. I’ll be running mine back to back tomorrow along with a few other basses to see how it fits in the family. This one is brand new so it has the stock round wound strings on it (whatever those are).That's fantastic! How cool is that! Congratulations on a great present. And she got the right color too!

So far I’m really loving it!
Nice and light, balances excellent in my lap, no noticeable dead spots, fit and finish looks to be flawless (Gibson QC appears to have their act together). The sound is absolutely in my favorite range (creamy vs raspy, warm vs harsh, low and low mid focused vs upper mid focused).
Might be the strings or the pup heights (they’re lower than my VP pups) or the pup placement, or maybe even the pup design - but I’m surprised and pleased with the slight difference I think I’m hearing between this bass and my VP. I love the VP and it’s aggressive nature but didn’t really want a carbon copy duplicate of that if I could avoid it. I haven’t played them back to back yet, but I think this bass falls somewhere between a modern Gibson Tbird and the Eppi VP (possibly a tad closer to the Eppi than the Gibby).
For some reason I had just assumed it would sound identical to the VP, but at first blush I don’t think it does (should know for sure tomorrow). Since you have both basses I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the NR vs the VP sound as well.
