Thunderbird Club

Here’s my top 5 picks for the day…

A Studio Tbird, relatively rare, built a bit different from non Studio models, very nice sounding, might be a bit heavier than most Tbirds…

A 2014 anniversary Tbird, only year with the 12th fret anniversary flag…

Good price on a pre 2000 model…
Gibson USA Thunderbird IV 1996 Vintage Sunburst (S/N:94016567) (12/19) | Reverb

Not a Gibson by name but virtually the same at half the price, Epiphone CP models have Gibson pickups and sound exactly like their more expensive cousins. Visually almost identical to the Gibson as well. Of the five basses listed this would be my second choice
Epiphone Thunderbird Sunburst | Reverb

Also not a Gibson, Greco basses are getting harder to find at reasonable prices, many in the club hold these in higher regard than most modern Gibson Tbirds. Quite possibly the perfect gigging Tbird bass, absolutely a monster bass. Of the five basses I’ve listed here this would be hands down my first choice…
Greco TB-700 TB-70 1990 Black BK Thunderbird IV Electric Bass Fujigen MIJ w/ Gator Bag | Reverb

The Greco and the '96 (shallow pitch neck), followed by the mislabeled Studio, production is 2005-2010, not '90s.
:)

something wonky with your PCB or signal interconnect grounding….play an open E note and while it rings ground the “hot” side of the pot in question (with alligator clips for example) and see what happens…

Thanks! I'll do that first next time I'm working on it :)

Safe to assume, could be something shared by both input PCBs that runs to, or is on, the output PCB?

The Greco could be a little divey unless the upper strap button is relocated to the neck heel. But I don't own a Greco and don't know for sure. Easy and free mod if it needs it.

those two PCBs not sharing a common ground would definitely explain the symptom….oxidized lugs, kinked wire, loose grounding screws, broken wire, open resistor….stuff like that… could also be pots in need of replacement but I doubt it…

Yes, and yes. :)
Got this a few weeks ago, swapped out the EMG's for The Apollos.

What Jazz Bass it is? More frets than on a a "normal" Fender.

From time to time I get a GAS for 70's Jazz Bass. Mostly it's a black with a white pickguard, maple fretboard with black blocks (because of Geddy and with a black pickguard, Wetton) or a natural with otherwise same specs (because of Squire). I used to dislike the maple fretboard with pearloid blocks, especially on a black bass but not anymore. I blame the swedes again. Tommy Thordsson has such a great sound here and I like the look of that bass with no pickguard.

A design from a Swedish Luthier, Gary Levinson.
This bass was from when production was licensed to production MIJ.
2 piece ash, ebony fret board. 12"radius, just love this bass, and it's light for a J.
around 8.5.

Good plan. Were the EMGs too polite? SD makes some good pickups and I think is often overlooked with so many newer manufacturers.

To me, the EMG's lacked character and were a bit to hot.
I wanted that tear you up 70's J tone without the hum.
I've had The Apollos before. Absolutely incredible tone.
Plus it's been wired series parallel.

Merry Christmas and thank you for taking the time to put this together. How do you approach the Craigslist stuff if you don’t live close there?

When I bought my Greco Bird (Identical to the one in the listing posted above), the strap button had already been relocated to the neck heel. Not much neck dive now with a grippy strap.

FWIW, the corroded bridge on the Greco can be replaced with an Epiphone 3 point bridge. It's a perfect fit!!

It's a delicate conversation up front from my recent experience. There are tons of scammers that reach out to CL sellers so you will probably be lumped into that group on initial contact. I recommend proper grammar and not just one liners like "Would you ship it". I went thru this earlier in the year with a seller in Oregon, but he ended up doing the deal.

This one has been for sale for about 6 weeks and he has lowered the price $300 since first posting it. If you don't mind the wear, see if he is willing to deal. If he says he doesn't have a box large enough to ship, tell him you have a friend in South Gilbert that has boxes that will fit a Thunderbird. I would be happy to donate a box to the cause or help in other ways if needed.

And there are prolly plenty of those available for cheap right here in the club.

I think I'm finally going to break down & "refinish" my junk-bass, hence the sander.

My painting skills are :poop: , so it may turn out questionable, but should at least be a fun time :)

Tried one of those Dean Explorers last year in a used instruments shop. I think it had a different pickup than yours though.
