Thunderbird Club

I'm not dissing or making fun of his talent as a musician (which I admit he has plenty of it) All I'm saying is that I can't stand him. No need to call me ignorant or lame, don't know what I did for you to say that to me...

To begin with - I didn't call you either of those names. Frankly, I was speaking generally about 'people' (not you specifically) aside from my initial reply related to your dissing Scot Divine. (Oh, god, not this clown again...) I guess it somewhat similar to the oft mentioned Neil Young - many may not care for him, his music, and/or his politics.., but there is no call (on this forum) to berate him based on ones personal opinion as other participants feel the opposite. If I said John Entwistle was a clown - I would get a pretty rapid negative response, and deservedly so. Just that - happy new year.

Mel Schacher... yup. His basswork on American Band is something. Duck too. Less familiar with the other 2, apart from Peter Cetera's amazing voice.
Myself, I tend to be drawn to rock bassists/vocalists, JJ being an exception among them. Guys like Geddy Lee, Michael Anthony, Paul McCartney, CF Turner (BTO) and also Breen LeBoeuf, a Franco-Ontarian that moved to Montreal in the 70s and to hold the low-end for the band Offenbach, a band who mostly did french-language hard-rock, with an occasionnal english outing. He wasn't the main singer in that band (Keyboardist Gerry Boulet was, as well as BL) and they were never well-known outside the french-canadian market, but these guys rocked it as solid as it came and Breen even backed Celine Dion at one point later in his career, that's how good a singer he is. I'm nowhere these guys of course and simply associating myself with such a lot could be considered blasphemy, but I work hard at providing both solid bass and decent backvocals in the current band (Journey, Loverboy, BonJovi et al covers) and the occasional main vox in other projects, so these guys are what I'm shooting at. Lifelong process :).

His range is ~an octave higher than mine. Most of the leads I sing are down a 4th or 5th from the original. Ah ain't no Country Tenor.:rollno:

That's understandable Kara - what I was specifically referring to is those who proudly state not knowing who their instrument of choice pioneers are/were like a badge of honor. Even punk-funk Flee would be the first to acknowledge respect for those innovators of rock, jazz classical and many other musical forms. Because of when I was a young teen ('66-) all of that great music & great players were front & center, and after hearing Bitches Brew by Miles Davis in '69 (which was like taking LSD w/o taking it) - I was catapulted into listing to all sorts of jazz and it's rock derivatives. Like most of my age peers - I feel very lucky.

One doesn't have to 'like' all forms/genres/eras/styles of music, but as a musician - specifically a bass player, a reluctance to educate ones-self of the rich past on the instrument over decades is sad and limiting. One will never know if one like or not likes something until one listens to it. I don't like or listen to Kenny G, but a lot of people do/did and if I were a horn-player, I'd have to acknowledge his presence. :)

Agree :)

I like learning new stuff about music & musicians.
I don't always find that the newly learned stuff always suits my tastes, but I'm still glad to have learned it

Where your influences started in the mid-60s, with that music & those players, mine was mid-80s going into the '90s - bassists like Steve Harris, Duff McKagan, Sean Yseult, and a few holdovers from the '70s like Geezer. People whose musical style(s) really spoke to me more than others, I guess :)

Harris and McKagan... no slouches. I think there's a vid on the tube of Harris singing lead during a singer's absence, with those insane basslines he's playing.
Gots lots of respect for that.

I’ve come clean and admitted I have a problem. I’ve told her about the 11th Tbird that will soon be joining the flock. Although I don’t think she has figured out there are already ten spread out in various places. I’m a goner when the music room is set up and all are in one place.
My name is Marshall and I'm a bass-o-holic.

Hi Marshall...

so much polemic when this guy’s name comes up….happens everytime…
he’s like our Jimi Hendrix! imho…
once read an interview with JAE where he describes his initial reaction after hearing Jaco interpret Bird’s “Donna Lee” (where it probably could not have been pulled off had another tone/EQ setting been used) for the first time (similar reaction many guitarists expressed when they first heard VH’s “Eruption”) where he replayed it a second time to try an get the jist of it and tried to pickup on the general concept, later putting it to rest but content/satisfied that he (somewhat) “looked into it”…..pretty much all one can do….ymmv…

Jaco playing that was a direct link to Charlie Parker - both unparelleled as relentlessly creative forces.

Don't know about you guys, but on this rainy Saturday PM, I'm into preparing tomorrow's NYD dinner for my brothers and their families, while watching the Star Wars saga and keeping an eye on you.... and wishing my custom white goth fenderbird comes to me soon.

Youzes ?

I got my can of ginger ale ready to bring in the New Year.
Probably be asleep before all the stupidity here.
They'll all wake me up and i'll be yelling, get off my fire-escape. :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

Just made set-lists for tomorrows (J1) The Sean Conneries show and now will spend a couple hrs rehearsing them. 24 songs, 5 originals by our Paul, 3 instrumentals (one being his), 4 new songs played for the 1st time live (3 of them French Ye-Ye songs from the late '60s), and our 1st show with new drummer Zach. Later, dinner at a friends house followed by charades. (~) oh well, it'll be... fun? :)

Is anyone aware of anyone that makes the black Thunderbird PG with the logo “engraved” like the original would be?
I got the black PG for my '15 from an ebay seller. I believe we all did, meaning those of us with '15s. It isn't exactly engraved. I don't know how they did it, but it is not a sticker.

Le temps de l'amour...
the Françoise Hardy version is something on bass, right ?
