That is unusual - I've encountered the exact opposite... guitarists with way too many pedals. (too much stage real-estate) Both of my bands now have it under control.

I was a Fender player for years and Rics were very different for me when I first started playing them, I just kept playing them until they felt good, same with Thunderbirds. I've owned at least thirty Rics in my time, most were used and bought online and never had a real problem that I couldn't fix if one had one which wasn't usually the case. They're actually very versatile. They're not something you can just jump on and and feel right at home after playing Fenders, which is why so many people bash them, they don't take the time to get used to them, same thing with Gibsons I believe. I pick up my '79 4001 now and it feels like home to me and in some ways is the easiest playing bass I own. To me different style basses are like a relationship, you have to commit to them.Now, try an upright.

Never been to Dallas. Huston has good free museums but that's all I can positively say about it. Austin seems ok - Miles lives there. (I've been there)
I very rarely use pedals either, I've used an EBS Valve Drive here and there, that's about it.

...and love the sound I'm getting using them. BBC Sonic Stomp/BOSS RV-6/MXR d.i.+/BOSS CS-2 on full time. Everything else for one song or another.

Wow, you're fancy! This is all I use. The bass expander (opposite of compressor) pedal I'm waiting for could make me have to rethink this to allow for one more pedal. I've been doing too much thinking about it, not even knowing if I'll need it.
None of the big cities are really Texas, and each of them is pretty different from the others (Dallas & Ft Worth the least so). I like it here. I could happily live in San Antonio or El Paso. Houston, Dallas, or Ft Worth? Not so sure.
Nope. Not in the budget, not enough room for it in the house or car. No real use for it, either. Barring replacements in case of disaster or theft, I don’t see buying any more basses soon. I’d make an exception for a Holy Grail bass.

I only mind/have issues playing with a guitarist like that for three reasons, all related to a gigging band; occupying too much valuable stage real-estate, the chronic/inevitable potential for something not working, and too much time getting on and off the stage. Any imagined "need" (for all those pedals) needs to conform to this to make a show go smoothly and enjoyably for the band that guitarist is in. As I've noted prior - BG's lead guitarist (a very good guitarist and still a good friend) was asked to leave because of these issues. If we were pro it would be one thing - but life is too short to put up with this doing it for fun.

But at least the newest 4003’s have the option to add or remove the sound choke. So you could still get (close to?) the 4001 sound if it was wanted. That’s right???Don't believe everything you read here
4001's are more expensive now though. The newer Rics have thicker necks and the pickups are wound more, but they're nice basses and sound good, some people like the newer ones and some like the older ones, I like the older ones a little better but like both. If you want a new one, try a 4003S, they're a few hundred cheaper than the regular 4003's, they're mono and don't have binding or triangular inlays on the neck, otherwise they're the same. Prices seem high on ebay. No sure if you can buy from Sweetwater but they usually have decent prices.
Cool. What does the Tom Clancy pedal do? Is it for overflow?
I wasn’t even talking about crazy rigs (tho I have seen them!) i don’t find, say, 8-12 pedals unreasonable (although few make good use of them). And you can put a lot into small space.
when I bought my board, we had plenty of stage room. We don’t even have a stage at the nee church (we meet in a small event center), just floor. We can take whatever room we need, but that’s all we tend to use. I could get by without it but would rather not. Thankfully, I don’t have to.
It’s my amp leaner backer. I have a hardback (Without Remorse) in the pedalboard case for gigging.

Clancy of the Overflow is a famous, old, Australian bush ballad/poem. Here done in a mashup with Under The Milky Way Tonight.
I wouldn't worry as much about board size if I had a car. If I have to go larger, I'm worried about even going to 18" because I hang the hard case off my Gator soft case. Traveling by subway with this stuff is hard.

I like San Antonio. I've been there a number of times. My favorite thing about Fort Worth was the water gardens from Logan's Run.
