Thunderbird Club

The Bart has a deeper and more smooth or refined sound. The CBs are more raw and on a recording don't seem to have the same lows. But amps have knobs and live I suspect they sound bigger. I like the CBs better, but the Barts don't sound bad by any means.

I tried Barts many years ago and personally found them too dark for what I want to hear. I might still have a Bart hb in my parts bin. But then, I favor more mids and a rounded top-end compared to a 'pillow-y' bass tone. If I played Reggae I'd want Barts for sure - them and an Audere 9v pre. :bassist: (massive bottom!)

I feel like the Bart is a better fit with the J and Powersteels. The CB is a little bright.
I’m going to try the other Bart in my ash/maple Bird.

My EBO with LaBella DTFs is great for that fat dub.

I recorded a clip of my J with the Chinabucker:
DJB SCD clip JwCB 0126 23.mp3

And then with the Bartolini Neck PU:
DJB SCD clip JwBart 0126 23.mp3

I did my best to keep all else equal. The blend pot was on all neck PU. Strings are SIT Power steels. Its through my PF50T with the Transformer DI output into the Focusrite.
First of all, excellent playing and selection of song to showcase how each pickup fits in the mix!

On my iPad I didn’t hear a substantial difference. In fact, you could have spliced the two recordings together and I doubt I could tell where one pickup ended and the other started. Played back through my 210 GK bass combo at stage volume the Chinabucker sounded slightly fuller and richer, the Bart sounded a bit more mid focused and had a tad more grind to it, but still quite warm. Overall the recording was very hifi with lots of detail in the notes played by each instrument but maybe EQ’d just a tad too bass heavy (there was more punch from the kick drum and the bass than was needed). If you dialed that bass back just a bit in the mix it would be very difficult to tell the difference between the two pups.

They’re so close it’s a tough call, but if you’re looking for a hair more grit the Barts had it. It you’re looking for warm and smooth the CBs had it. Interesting observation - the Barts seemed less forgiving on missed frets, they wanted to jump strait to grit mode. I didn’t hear that with the CBs, being warmer they might be a bit more forgiving.

Thanks for posting! Very interesting results and excellent playing.

Top down/heater on? That's the way I drove my 62 Impala the first warm-ish day of "spring" when I was stationed in Charleston, SC.

They don't call it a 'mud-bucker' for nothin'! :bassist: I use LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats on a few of my basses. Them and GHS Precision Flats - I like both.

Yup. I gots LaB. DTFs on my Epi EB-0. Unfortunately, the E of that set was 'weak'. I replaced it with an EBCF E that I'd taken offa the 67NR. Brought the EB-0 to life.

I’m still way behind, but will catch up.

Spent the afternoon in the woodshed. Literally. Had a cord of almond delivered and had to stack and get it covered before the next storm which will supposedly hit tomorrow. I would have much rather been shedding inside with Thunderbirds.

Dude, that's what grandkids are for...

I finally got the Bach!

I met up with my friend George @GBassNorth earlier today who was parting ways with his Bach Thunderbird II. He didn’t gel with it, but he wanted to make sure it remained in the family. We “did the deal” in the parking lot at the bank. Things have been too crazy for me to visit his amazing bass room, so we met halfway for each of us.

I had to scurry back for a wood delivery at the mountain house, so our meeting was unfortunately brief. I owe him and his wife a lunch.

So here she is:

It’s in very good to excellent condition. A couple of minor scratches and a couple dings on the top of the headstock. Legend has it the Scott @godofthunder59 was a prior owner so that’s likely where the top of the headstock dings happened.

I’ll post more on this as I get to know her.

Thanks George,
Mike Greene, our guitarist wrote that tune.

I multitracked our last session and I've having lots of fun playing with it.
Haven't EQed the bass on those clips, but I did LPF and EQ the bass drum. It still has a little of my original bass track in it, because my cab was a couple of feet away from the bass drum - gonna move that before the next session.

I like them both equally on your recordings, for me, through the different amps I've tried them with I found the CB's lacked "fullness" that is they were a bit thin in certain frequency ranges in comparison to my other basses with different pickups. I have a set of them in my Orville, they're ok, but if Gibson does decide to sell the 2021 Non Reverse pickups separately I will change them out.

Great score Marshall!
It's good to see that lovely bass stay within our group, I'm very glad to have one back in my fold.

Anyone have issues with gorgomyte.com shipping orders? I placed an order on January 5 and still haven't received my Gorgomyte cloth. Sent them an email at [email protected] and got no response.

I totally forgot I ordered the Gorgomyte cloth as well. I just checked PayPal and I paid on the 5th as well. When did you send your email to the seller?
