Thunderbird Club

A Thunderbird has different ergos that the usual clone type bass, which means there's a learning curve. Or maybe not, in the case of some of us who naturally find the way you can have a low picking hand and high fretting hand ideal. It's an easy reach and more comfortable if it works for you. It's not a long reach at all with the neck tipped up. If you swing the bass around to your hip, it's an easy reach even if you don't have it tipped up.

If that bass has chosen you, you have been chosen. That's how you become a Thunderbird player. It's kismet.
I have 38 inch long monkey arms, so reach isn't an issue. I sometimes think the reach issue is an optical illusion

I've short arms and legs, and when I first took the Goth to practice (sitting) I found I was 2 frets out from where I went on autopilot. So 5th instead of 3rd compared to the PBass copy.
But standing - I hold the neck more vertically - I haven't found any issue.
Just a matter of getting used to it I think.

Hey that's me!

Tune it D standard, problem solved

I think I might pull the trigger on a T-bird classic pro from Amazon. I have to pay return shipping but that's not as bad as some places. With my Rickenbacker gone, I am lacking a great rock bass. My J bass with flats is great, but it doesn't feel the same.

or would it be worth it to find a nice used Gibson T-bird?

Yeah I'm a finger style player and I typically keep my bass centered on my belt line. Not terribly high but not low either. I just sold my Ric. I liked playing that one a bit lower, but the neck prevented me from playing it comfortably. I rarely play with a pick.

So whats the consensus on the Epiphone Classic T bird? Obviously I love the styling but that J neck is a nice feature.
I dunno... if you didn't like the Rickenbacker, I'm not sure you'll like a T-bird... its neck is thicker than my 4003S's. It's still relatively comfortable, but not quite as much.

The Epiphone Classic IV I do find more comfortable than the Gibson version.

No.

Except for Joan Jett. She's always cool.

Well the 1.5" nut width will definitely be better than the Ric. I'm not sure if the T-birds have more of a rolled edges type of feel or not, but my problems with the Ric stemmed from the non tapered neck and the flat non rolled edges. The depth of the neck was fine, although I prefer a rounder neck shape rather than the shallow D that my Ric had. But you are right, there is a big "if" with a T-bird. I'm not entirely sure it will work either.

Have you got the BaCH back from the shop yet?
Yes, last week. The repair is still visible thats fine as ling as I dint feel it (and I dont). Mike at Player's Guitar said bring it back if the crack reemerges over the next several months, he will take care of it no extra charge. He only charged me $60 bucks in the first place. Nice work AND inexpencive.

I'm thinking the best option is trying to find a used classic pro. Assuming no issues with it, you'll likely have nothing to lose if you don't like it and want to re-sell it. I think it's the best way to try something you've never tried and are not sure if it's what you want. That way you can re-sell with Little to no loss. Just takes a little patience to find what you want.

However, if you want to buy new, with the new Epi's being announced, and replacing the classic pro's, there might be clearance deals to be found in the coming months.

Well when I went to ship a bass yesterday it was 125.00 to ship. So between that and PayPal fees I have would probably break even by buying a new one. I just hate living in the middle of nowhere and not being able to walk in and grab something.
