Looks like I'll be swapping my GK Neo 212-II for a Peavey Pro 810. Gonna need to move more air, get a little more 'push' for the outdoor, dockside hotel reggae gig this summer. Apparently the Peavey is quite the beast.
Of couese I'll have to move it too.

I just saw a Peavey 8X10 for a steal at a local store. I really wanted to grab it to go with my ugly SVT head. My wife would throw a fit tho as I really do not have room for it.....or a vehicle that could move it

Nice review! First thing I did with my OLP was shoot gloss nitro clear on the neck like my '77.

IMO the first generation two band preamp Leo Fender StingRay with it's Alnico magnet pickup does have the capability to sound like a vintage Thunderbird. The 'activeness' of the bass is minimal. It sounds very big but not harsh like many ceramic magnet/ 3 band pre systems can.

I kind of like the 3 band 90s-current stingray sound, almost bought a sterling in 2000 (USA made, not SBMM) but ended up with the Warwick FNA instead. Not sure if it is ceramic or alnico, probably a ceramic because there are bar magnets underneath iirc. The preamp on those is basslines 3band MM with slap contour. The mid placement of the pickup on the FNA plus my anchoring uncovered that the poles were not grounded. Since I boosted the treble to accentuate the percussive snap, the grounding buzz was quite apparent. Warwick informed me that I inadvertantly discovered the Achilles heel of the pickup, and they were working on a replacement, which they replaced mine with after it became available. They never asked the repair shop for the old pickup back, so I got to keep it. That is where my OLPs pickup came from, I don't anchor as much on the pole piece in the classic stingray position, and that bass has no preamp so it hasn't been a problem, also for my pair of 5 string FNAs which have the pickup in stingray position as well, which were bought used so no warranty, poles also ungrounded. My USA p bass is also ungrounded as many p pickups are, but the poles are much smaller and there is plenty of plastic real estate to anchor on. I had a stingray classic 2 band for a while, but could not afford to keep it or the 2 other stringrays I bought around the same time. I never owned a vintage one, but the classic is pretty close. I know the basslines stc-2c-bo I have my eyes on (it is inexpensive and it fits) won't be the same as a classic 2 band, but if it is halfway between that and the stc-3-mm preamps I will be happy. I plan on setting the treble switch to 6k modern mode rather than 3k vintage mode, I like my ray sound snappy. If I get around to doing that mod. It works well with just a passive tone, the cap value actually makes it sound like a mid boost when the tone is rolled all the way off. I plan on putting that harness in my peavey milestone II to match the quarter pounder, when I finally put the pre in the OLP.

$150 seems to be the going rate. Buy it now listings are asking for more, but checking completed listings I see a lot of $150 even some $130 or less.

are those epiphone goth thunderbirds any good?

I use mine, 2006 MIK in a system of a down tribute. I especially like the feel of the satin on the back of the neck.

No TV silver for me. $350 is out of my range, and my principles won't allow me to spend new price on used stuff. Especially when it is just due to a limited edition. I called the pawn shop to ask them about the $249 sticker and $350 listing, and he told me it now has a $399 sticker because he got new info. Damn you eBay! Damn you to hell! The only one completed went for $255 with an ibanez hard case that fit, it had finish cracks at the neck pocket, but still... That price included a case! So someone has one listed for $350 that has not sold... So that's what pawnshops ask for them. I'm sure it was a lie when he told Me music stores were offering $320 for it. I forgot to mention the $255 one, I called right at closing time.

I guess I will continue to watch it on CL and if it is still there for a while I will try again. $250 and I would take it. I can get any other color for closer to $150, I don't need the slim taper neck, though it would be nice.

At work(i run heavy equipment) most guys listen to the radio and I get so tired of the same crap "music" that when I DO listen to the radio its usually talk radio. Lol

I'm with Klondike; most radio is repetitive schlock. There is a Toronto station (Q107) that has turned me off Led Zeppelin; I love Zep, but they would play a few songs endlessly. Q and Zep are off my list now. But there are a couple of things that I have grown to like. First is Little Steven's Underground Garage on Sirius. A great variety of music from many eras and genres. I have discovered some very interesting bands from that. Second, is Groove music (formerly Xbox music) the 'radio' function would choose music related to any chosen artist. I have discovered some great music through that that I'm not sure that I would have found any other way.

I now go back to my own historical eras and Sturgeons law applies. As an example, as a pre-teen, I understood that disco sucks (not just because Alice Cooper. Steve Dahl, and D.O.A. said so). But now, I go back to what survived, and it is good. Before I get myself lynched, keep in mind that bands like Kiss, Queen, and Pink Floyd adopted elements of disco to remain relevant/profitable. I remain enamoured with such diverse music as big band jazz, opera, heavy metal, psychedelic rock, and classic rock. Keep in mind that Mozart and Beethoven were the punk rock of their time...

And I will close with the Osmonds. Donny and Marie's lyric "I'm a little bit country, I'm a little bit rock and roll" was prescient of the development of "New Country".

Lol I used to hide my Black Sabbath LPs in my dads Perry Como sleave. A couple times he discovered it and broke my album in half.

I was fortunate in that nothing was censored, although volume was controlled. But, I just can't find my all time favorite Toronto punk band in any digital format and I don't think they even exist on the internet. I enjoyed them primarily because they were so offensive, A Bunch of F#*&ing Goofs, who sang the song Let's F#*&.

I LOVE Little Steven's show!!! I used to download the episodes to my Ipod to listen to during work. I can't listen to it as often now but still do when I can.

If the radio is on, it's usually set to the classical station. I like the stuff on there a lot more consistently than with anything else. If I don't like something on there, I switch to NPR. They have cool stuff sometimes.

I am going to be having music nightmares, as this conversation has reminded me of the awful music I was exposed to growing up. ["Twilight Zone" Theme here with Rod Serling voice over] Imagine if you will . . . growing up in a town of 800, where the closest "city" was Fargo, ND (and nowhere near as fun/funny as movie or TV series). Until the "Midnight Special," all the music on TV in my house was "Hee Haw," "Donnie and Marie" AND an hour-long show of POLKA music. I had no older sibs to introduce me to cool stuff. My dad liked old (and bad) country (Tammy Wynette as opposed to Johnny Cash). As a teen, I would go to a record shop and look for "weird" album covers: Bowie, Mott the Hoople, and early Sabbath.

To this day, I can't believe that they carried it but on one trip I found/bought a copy of Ian Drury and the Blockheads' "New Boots and Panties". There was a track on it, titled: "Plaisto Patricia". It began with him spouting a plethora of vulgarities. I loved to crank it to see if my parents were paying attention (which they weren't). Around this same time, I was lucky that my folks indulged me and bought me my first bass and amp. I would hold up in my room trying to learn basslines from songs on Joe Jackson's "Look Sharp" or Elvis Costello's "This Years Model". Unfortunately, I didn't find any bandmates until college.

There is a lot of pop crap out today as there was then. Good terrestrial radio has gone the way of the dodo bird. I happen across new stuff through YouTube and algorithms on my Pandora "stations". What's old is new - it is all grounded in the genres I loved in 80s and 90s (garage rock/post-punk).

Fargo, the movie, is funny partly for the accents.

My dad didn't like the music I listened to when I was a teenager, but he just told me to turn it down, and otherwise didn't care, as he was well aware that his own parents hadn't liked his music when he was a teenager, either.

Dirty little secret - an 810 sized cabinet has wheels. They are like rolling around a hand truck. I think they are easier to deal with than almost any other sized cabinet if you have a big enough vehicle to handle them. There's a bit of lifting technique involved, but I think my Acoustic 360s are very straight forward to move in spite of weighing almost as much as I do.

Yep. I prefer moving my 2x15 around to my single 15" cab. The big cab has wheels and is easy to roll around.

With both pickups all the way up, it has a scoop similar to a jazz bass, so if you dial back the neck pickup to about 80% the scoop goes away a bit and the high mids bump back up a bit. likewise, if you dial the bridge back to 80% with the neck on full, it is more of a low mid bump. The bridge pickup solod is middy. It really depends on how you eq your amp. Being a mahagony instrument, it is not going to be as bright as an ash, alder, maple bass. It is not a honky mids bass by nature, but it is not so scooped that you can't get any mids out of it. Also, the strings I use on mine are scoopy, because I am broke and already had a set lying around in the guage I needed (dean markedly nickelsteels), for mid punch, d'addario XL is a little better. Others can chime in on other string suggestions for good mids on a goth.

Edit: I had neck and bridge backwards in the post, it is fixed now.

A series parallel switch is best of both worlds. On a Thunderbird it would probably need to be incorporated as a push pull pot due to real estate issues. I might do that to mine someday, but I don't have series mods on my jazz bass either, I can live without it. I like doing the blendy thing, so I would need the option of going back to parallel.
