Congratulations on the new bird. Sorry you had QC issues and there is no excuse for sending it out with those issues.

Yeah it had two inspected by stickers. One from Indonesia and one in the USA. If I had to guess, this was sitting in a GC somewhere and it got messed up a little. I regret nothing though. I am in lust with this bass right now

Welcome and congratulations to willsellout!
I never tire of hearing stories like yours, and thanks to all the guys here for their good advice. Play that beautiful Bird in good health Sir, you're #628 in the club!

So I get it home and unbox it and it's a lot smaller than I thought it would be. But it's absolutely stunning! So I do a quick once over and:
The Bad:
-Small ding in the headstock
-The bridge pickup was completely loose and falling out. The screws were completely loose. Great QC there.
-Setup was horrible. Worst I've ever seen on a new instrument. It appeared the truss rod was maxed out. Board was just on the verge of convex. The bass was unplayable.
-Getting to the truss rod was a pain. I kept having to take the A string out of the nut to adjust. Small inconvenience though, not too bad.
-The nut could use a little filing. Not too much but a little bit on the E string mainly.

The Good:
It's gorgeous!
It weighs 8.1 lbs!
The neck is amazing. it's the perfect width, perfect shape, everything. And I dig the flat radius.
-It sounds exactly like I hoped it would...actually better. Tons of sustain and with a piano-like quality to it. But quite aggressive.
-The electronics are really quiet, knobs turn smoothly, and I find that the V/V/T setup works really really well on this bass. Very usable

So I did a setup on it and I really like the bridge. you can't fine tune, but you make quick adjustments that make a big difference. The action is medium low and it plays exceptionally well. I love it. I found that if I run the rear part of the strap over the back edge it plays easer for me. It kind of leans forward if I don't. It's not hard to play that way, but it plays better the other way. I had big concerns over the reach but honestly it's more playable that a lot of basses I've owned. I love it.

This is obviously honeymoon stage but generally I know immediately if I have doubts. I have zero doubts. It feels like home just like my J bass does.

If it's typical, a good setup will put the bridge very close to the body of the 'Bird. I'm not sure what an Epi is like specifically, but every one of my Thunderbirds that have a three point have the three point lowered almost as far as it can go. Newer ones may have a slightly different geometry and be OK with a higher bridge, but I don't know for sure. As far as the QC problems, that's a pain! I hope it was straight forward to sort out.
You know the bridge isn't really close to the body at all on this one. You have a little over 1/4 of an inch on most of the screws. At some point in the future I will replace the strings and set it up again and I will probably fine tune it a bit more but it really does play awesome as is. I am falling deeper and deeper in love with the neck and I love how light it is. Honestly I wish I had given these a chance a couple years back.

Nice! drool
Welcome to the Thunderbird Club have you danced naked outdoors at the bonfire yet?:smug:
Not yet:D

Honestly I went to physical therapy today for my back pain and they tortured the hell out of me. So it's a struggle to stand for any length of time, so dancing might have to wait. LOL. I keep having to stop playing the T-bird because my back is just killing me.

Sorry to hear that. Hope it gets better soon.
Thanks, appreciate it. Sometimes healing hurts. I always hurt after PT but I see the progress I'm making and it's worth it. Don't neglect your core muscles folks...your back will thank you!

One more thing of note on the bass...I typically don't care for lacquered necks, but this neck flies. I found the Ric neck paint a bit sticky...not excessively so but a little bit. This one is super fast. I should have skipped the Ric purchase and went straight for a T-bird to begin with.

There is nothing better than a good bird. I joined the club with a perfect 2015 with the core tapped pickups. It is awesome. If you find you have dive issues, bite the bullet and get the slingshot strap. it is adjustable to almost any preference. Welcome to Birdland!

It mostly has to do with the venues we've been playing, anymore I just bring a GK410 and the 700RB to act as my stage monitor ( a little bass blowing your skirt up is a good thing) and the house PA is more than doing the rest. Most of our regular venues have good sound guys, so I'm travelling a little lighter than I used to.
At this point my D-180 and Sunn 2000S 2x15 is my rig at almost every show I play. The 2x15 has wheels, so is actually easier to move than my 1x15, and it's a shallower, but wider cab, so it doesn't stick out into the playing area of the stage as much.

I never know what to expect going into a new venue. Luckily most of the sound people recently have been amenable to putting a mic on the cab, some doing it without even being asked.

At some point in the future I will replace the strings and set it up again and I will probably fine tune it a bit more but it really does play awesome as is. I am falling deeper and deeper in love with the neck and I love how light it is. Honestly I wish I had given these a chance a couple years back.
If you have the three point bridge make sure the front screw is higher than the back two screws. This tilt in the bridge transfers the force a bit and keeps the threaded bridge inserts from pulling out of the body. Overall I really like the three point design but it is a different beast than the typical Fender type design.

BAG ALERT!

I had some time to kill tonight because band practice got rescheduled, and since I have a case of gas I dropped into GC for the last 45 minutes of its "openage". Unfortunately no used birds, but I did not expect any since I had been watching the site. The only bird there was the usual epiphone $349 sunburst IV, which I will talk about in a separate post. So I notice the normally $39.99 roadrunner avenue gig bag was on sale for $29.00 and the sale ended 2/1. So I stuck the bird in it, and lo and behold, with a little coaxing, it fit! It is tight against the headstock like it is in the nearly unpadded fender monstrosity of a gig bag that the previous owner included, but there is padding against it. I feel much better about this bag.

Unfortunately, right after I bought the bag, I got a text back from former drummer telling me I was not worth the breath of talking to, so there is not only no chance of buying his bird, but he said he won't give back the banner and we can go buy a new one. There was a novel written to him by the guitarist with all the reasons and examples of such, as to why he was fired, 90% was before I was in the band, but he had to throw in the small unneeded info about his drunk, racist and homophobic banter with the bartender after the show, which basically ratted me out for ratting him out. In a guy like thats' mind, that makes the firing my fault and I am a liar, since he denied everything. Bad bad on the guitar player for not just keeping that to himself.

When I apologized for bothering him, he told me I was worth less than s#it on his shoes... A screenshot of this really pissed the guitar player off and made him feel even better about firing the guy. I have withheld from posting this drama on talkbass when it was current, but maybe now it is fair game for fodder, if I get bored.

In other words, I discovered that the roadrunner RR 1EB avenue series gig bag FITS A T BIRD, and is only $29 but the sale ends tonight. But even at $39.99 it would be worth it.

Is the bolt pattern for the pickguard the same on all Gibson/epiphone thunderbirds or did it change with different OEMs?

Out of the 13 Epiphone and 2 Gibson birds that I have from different production years and factories, none of the pickguards are readily interchangeable - They either differ in size or screw hole pattern....

The only two that are fairly close are my Pro and Classic Pro, and that could very well be by accident...

That became obvious to me when I got my goth, with .115 .90 .70 .50 tuned to drop c, it was a necessity just so the strings didn't rattle in the bridge. So my back tilt is pretty pronounced, it made a huge difference

So I noticed that the $349 epiphone Thunderbird IV I played tonight at GC has the 1.5" nut, and I think the ex drummers was the same, but it was 2 months ago last I saw it.

Is this a new thing? Or are most of the standard bolt on epis that way, not counting the goth?

Also, this particular specimen had a very tilted neck, is the pocket that way or was there a pretty thick factory installed shim?

The tone was pretty dead, but I attribute that to the strings.

So my chance of a low priced bird from the EX drummer is shot, but I might keep my eyes open for another. I noticed someone mention that the bursts have a dark finishedbneck, but this one, and my memory of dickwads, was glossy natural mahagony, I liked it.

But with a standard polypro type strap, it was NECK DIVE city, even with the strap button on the heel (the way they come now). My goth does not dive like that did, but I have a much better strap that came with it that is not as slick. I bought an Ernie ball poly pro as well just in case whatever 2nd bird I got didn't come with a strap, I will test it with my goth and same dickies jacket and see if the dive is the same, or that particular one was extra neck heavy.

So that makes at least 15 different pickguard screw hole patterns.

That's OK, my plans were thwarted anyway, so there are no reasonably priced birds currently on the radar, dickwad can keep his, it wouldn't have even been in tune had I not tuned it 2 months ago. It just hangs on his wall and he is delusional about being able to play it. It is wall art. Surely he does not need the money, so art it remains...

Everyone else thinks epiphone bolt ons don't depreciate, or worse yet appreciate. And that is something that will always bother me. Eventually I contact them and after a couple months unsold, maybe they will come down to reality. EBay is even worse...
