Thunderbird Club

the Gibson tray design seemed more functional in that it stayed on when you swapped strings….guess you weren’t supposed to swap strings back then…..

As with most covers - the first thing to come off for players regardless.

BTW, your setup is flawless, string volume and response even in all registers….no dead spots and action can’t get any better with the strings bottoming out when playing laying down on couch but perfect when standing……:thumbsup::thumbsup:

When working with good stock - optimal set-up is always possible. :bassist:

I've have searching for the right used Thunderbird the last year. A few days ago I found this one; a 2018 in really nice shape. I mostly play Fenders and Music Mans (men?), so the T.Bird is quite a different beast to say the least. I figured it would take some getting used to, but it felt great right off the bat. The sound is amazing - super clear and articulate. Light-ish weight and perfect balance. I'm loving it. View attachment 5074939
Congratulations! And welcome. That is a beautiful Thunderbird with the stock Babicz bridge for that year. Enjoy it!

Love the classy way they showcased the gears. Never really noticed the actual key heads before, sculpted very nicely. They look like very high quality tuners, why are you considering offing them?

I dunno, just a thought. Something different?

I also thought about putting them on my bolt-on 'bird, of they'll fit, but that'll require more work because the tuner-holes will need to be reamed to fit.....and then the bridge inserts removed and chrome ones put in.....
I might go that way, there don't seem to be many of the burst birds with chrome hardware any more, so could be interesting.

Whatever I decide to put them on (maybe the unfinished Pro 4?) has at least 4-5 projects ahead of it

Sorry to have been so absent, but my studies have been kicking my rear. I changed the strings that came with my thunderbird to Rotosound's 45-105 Flatwounds RS77 LD, and before with the roundwound strings it came with, it sounded good, but now? Now it just sounds like a dream...
Yep, those are a great choice. Sound really good on certain basses and tonal objectives.

I like RS66 on a Thunderbird - that SS bite can't be beat. But I can see that RS77 would be a good choice too.

Just no cobalts!

Meaning Cobalt Rounds? If so what are your thoughts?

I briefly put some Cobalt flats on my BP, and, at least at low volume, felt they took away a lot of the unique bite/tone of the sound of the VP/760’s.

Cobalt flats are popular with some around here. I gave them a good try, but passed them on to George. To me, they’re definitely missing the growl I get from stainless steel rounds. I do like the feel and tension of them though.
