Unfortunately it looks to have broken off flush with the housing/bobbin, and I think I’d have to do more butchering to figure out how to tap back into that coil.

If I’m thinking of this wrong, let me know.

Couldn't you just re tin the wire and solder it back on?

I’d like to. If you can see that orange tape I put there, pointing to what looks like a single copper strand coming from inside the winding. There’s not enough of anything there to solder to. At least it looks that way. Maybe I’ll try anyway.

Edit to add: It’s a no-go. There’s just no wire left unless I completely disassemble the bobbin and unwound it. I’m not talented enough to make that trip.

It does look like Gibson’s fault. The wire was under a lot of strain. It was soldered to the shielded cable under tension. Seems like a bad assembly job. IMHO.

I tried it for about a day. I tried one first and last. I felt like it was taking too long to get the right level of compression in combination, and ended up just taking both off. I’m interested in hearing more about your setup…

GC had a slightly ratty one for $150 or so a few years ago. I took a pretty hard look at it. The guy behind the counter didn't know what it was. I made the mistake of telling him. I think he bought it, because it was gone the next day, not that I needed another Thunderbird at the time. Still, for that price, it was tough to pass by.

It might be easier to cut the solder with a dremel. I have had success repairing resoldering the lead on a PU before. Please take pics of the insides when you get it apart. Good luck!

I don't get along very well with compressors in a bass signal path. Compressors with guitar work better.

Uggh, That looks like the inner end of the coil. I would try to solder a lead to it, but if there's nothing there you are SOL.
You might get someone who works with pickups to repair it.
Worst case, I would swap the magnets into a Chinabucker as an experiment.

Interesting! Definitely SOL. If I come across some on the cheap, that may be the way to go.
