Thunderbird Club

View attachment 5244515 I haven’t played a gig with my Gibson Thunderbird for several years. I kinda forgot what an incredible instrument it is. It’s so light compared to my usual P-basses, it’s super fun to play with sustain for days (with round-wounds) and it has such a nice bright growl tone that rocks so perfectly. Plus, the ergonomics feel so natural and easy to play. It’s going to be coming out to shows a whole lot more. Oh yeah, it looks f***kin’ cool!!

Try some SIT Power Steels on it - you'll never put down again! :bassist:

Hey welcome here man - had no idea you played a T-bird! :bassist: Great pic as always!

My Goth is the wide nut as well. I somehow magically estimated about a 2011 birth for it although that is muddied by it being a refin. It is a China build though if that helps.

My Goth Bird also sat at ~ 1.7". I did however slim the entire neck down (at least most of the way), & its nut width sits currently at 1.625" (1 5/8"). Two reasons why i did so: 1- my other basses had slimmer widths & were easier to play than this bird, so i figured why not. 2- I was much younger, & inexperienced & just went at shaving off each side carefully (I did measure out what width i was achieving first, & traced all the way down - still, young & stupid kid xD). But anyway, it paid off, it feels nicer to play - much closer to some of my pbasses. Profile of the Bird is still chunky, which i don't mind, i prefer the heft over the slimmer profile of most other birds i've played.

That is why I almost always play one these days. Don't tell anybody about the ergos. That is our little secret around here. My P doesn't balance as well as the Thunderbird's, but I won't be telling anyone who doesn't already know.

Thank you auto correct for making me speak gibberish! I meant to say the reason I picked up bass…

Am I correct in saying, you also have/had an epiphone Goth series thunderbird, which you've modified way back when with Duncan SSb4s?

Twiggy also got me into Thunderbirds, even before Nikki Sixx & Overend Watts of Mott the Hoople fame. Twiggy's tone was a roaring thunder, & just massive body around the shrill of guitars/synths/keys.

We just figured the pubs were now open there in the UK.

You should see some of the idiotic things like texts I've sent using talk to text. Some of it is just crazy funny. (Yes, when in a hurry I often don't check before sending. I expect the dumb thing to work correctly.)

OK, I'm not a pickup conniesewer... mid/neck bass pickup player could care less about most bridge bass pickups.

I honestly can't tell a pbass from a jazz from shinola on a recording....

TB+'ses in my CP

the mid/neck pickup on the CP does not sound as good by itself as some others do (21 NR/Greco/Pbass etc..)

It does need a bit of the bridge to fill it out (vol/blend/tone)

I would put it in a similar category to a Rickenbacker and 7ender Jazz. it needs two pickups. not a bad thing it's just how it is.

I also do have the fretless board on my CP sanded extremely flat so it does the fretless "mwah" effortlessly, which I do find kind of annoying, just like constantly sliding into the note... I may sand it to more of a taper in the future...

Interesting about the 60's NR necks possibly being a a little more slim. One day I've got to play one even if never owning one.
It's reports from people owning/playing the 'new' NR's vs the 60s NR's-and their skinny necks-that have kept me from buying a reissue. That and, of course, mufunzalo.
On our last gig, I took the Epi Embassy due to a distinct possibility of lack of space. WRONG! Shoulda tooken the 67 NR.:banghead:

I'm ready to send you the inverness nr anytime for my deposit....

A little demo of the Bugera 1960, match made in heaven for me paired with a Thunderbird. ;)

Love it, now I want one, and I see that for that kind money 300-350 it could be a really nice amp for the house.

'64 II it's first time out live with me.

Thoughts?

The neck is well worn in and plays very comfortably, likely my favorite of all my Birds it just feels perfect. Sound wise I like it a lot but while it's old Nickel Rounds sound great at home, in the live sense they are a bit lacking in definition and I am going to replace them with some SIT Nickel Rounds this weekend.
