I never understood the fascination with sanding the shag out of something when refinishing so the serial # is no longer legible. How is the year of manufacture determined?

If you sand enough material to remove the serial #, you have thinned an already thin headstock. They may have added a veneer.
At this point it would be worth it to recreate the serial number, considering how much money the 60’s birds seem to be going for.
