Thunderbird Club

Well, sort of. Seattle is quite close to Vancouver, Canada, as well as a reasonable drive to Portland, Oregon. We discovered that when we were on our Pacific Northwest tour.
Right now.

I wasn't born in Seattle (Eastern WA.) but having lived here since 1961, the west coast especially Seattle and Portland were very isolated, travel was not so easy, Vancouver, B.C. seemed remote and hadn't developed it's reputation as the "Hollywood" of Canada yet. For much of the '70s and '80s this was a bit of a backwater part of the country. Happily, a lot of the area's senic beauty is untouched, I love living here.

I need to advertise for a guitar player as it's never going anywhere with my sometime jamming buddy - whenever we've sat down to play he's brought his entire family and it turns into a production with lunch and all the rest, when all I want to do is play music.

I've never had to advertise before so I have no idea what is reasonable to put in an advert. Obviously musical interests. Is it okay to say what guitar amps/pedals you really like? Should I say what kit I have?
I've gone through the same thing with some rehearsals at my guitarists' house. Kids and dogs running around and his wife feeling like she has to play hostess. More playing and less June Cleaver! As far as hooking up with another musician, don't worry about gear. They're just tools for a job. It's more important to get on the same page as far as shared interests, song selection and overall direction. What are your goals? Try to find someone that will paddle in the same direction as you. Good luck with your search!

Gaga is from NY, I believe.

Sixty Watt Shaman, Asthma Castle, Misery Index, and Oak are all from Baltimore. Marty Friedman, Gloom, Borracho, Wooly Mammoth, Darkest Hour, Pig Destroyer, and Pentagram are all from DC.

Right now.
As I mentioned, I was restricting my observation for genres I follow. But now that you mention it, I believe there is a music festival in the area for the types of acts/genre you noted (not sure what the correct term would be for the genre they play). So, it seems that this part of the Atlantic Coast is fertile ground for cultivating acts in certain genres (but maybe not so much for others).

There used to be a cool alt/indie station (WHFS) here and they hosted some great alt/indie concerts here in the 90s. But alas the station changed formats and the HFStival is no more.:crying:

You could make a loose reference involving a Tbird, as that's vibe... But mostly I'd get into what you're looking for, and a little about your own background. Again, references and keeping it from becoming a list of sorts would be pretty good. I like to try and make an ad a good read.

I'm not as connected to it at this point so it's a bit difficult to for me to say. In years past........

All of Seattle's "Shades of Gray" gave the rest of the world Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc. I'd suggest watching that Duff Mckegan thingie on Netflix as he talks quite a lot about music in Seattle, where grew up and first played before GnR.

Sunn O))) are originally from Seattle. Same with Thorr's Hammer, since that was basically Sunn O))) and a Norwegian vocalist.

Hissing, Year of the Cobra (a bass/drums duo), Isenordal, Il'Ithil, Nevermore, Christdriver, Bell Witch, Geoff Tate, Burial Chamber Trio, Big Business, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, Jeff Loomis, Lesbian, Baba Yaga, and Giza are all from Seattle.

Yeah, doesn't sound like the guitar player you've been jamming with is interested in seriously doing any music.

Basically what you're looking for, don't be too specific about gear, just specify that you expect someone who's serious about music and has a gigable rig.

Thunderbird bass-player, playing again after 30 years away. Musical interests/influences include Bowie, the Stooges, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, swampy minor key blues and a little Krautrock.

I am looking for a guitarist in the Inner Sydney area for tossing around ideas and a bit of loose and dirty jamming - sort of bastard offspring of Mick Ronson, Earl Slick, Neil Young, Ron Asheton, Rowland S Howard and Gemma Thompson. An ability to sing would be a plus. Ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation etc is irrelevant.

Just be short and sweet. Put an ad in the local Craigslist type rag saying "Wanted - Guitar God. Call for set list and audition schedule".

That way you don't limit yourself to some preconceived levels of acceptability. If an 18 year old shredder shows up and hits it out of the park it might make for an interesting twist to the band. Likewise, if somebody shows up with all the right gear and the right look but struggles to pull off several solos and several full band mixes they're outa there.

Good luck with the hunt.
I would not advertise looking for a "Guitar God." Because that's likely to attract a bunch of arrogant wankers who just want to play self-indulgent guitar solos, which is something I loathe.

Portland -> Seattle (or the reverse) is a very short drive on I-5. But maybe that's my Californian bias, since I'm used to having to drive ridiculous distances to get anywhere outside the Bay Area. Compared to the 9 hour Portland to Sacramento drive, the drive from Seattle to Portland on our tour was wonderfully brief.

Yeah, Maryland Deathfest is in Baltimore, and is pretty much the largest metal/heavy music festival in the United States.

I have had good luck being a wise-arse. It comes natural, which may come as a surprise.

Didn't know there was a T-Bird club. Still play mine from time to time.

Ability to sing like Iggy Pop is a bonus. Being female and able to sing like Iggy Pop is mind boggling.

Add that and you will get some entertainment. I put a line like that in an ad and ended up with a young woman who thought it was funny. We played together for about two years and are still good friends.

Shouldn't someone have invented an app for this, as it is a bit like Match.com, no? You take chessy rock shots of you with your gear. You list out political and religious leanings (in case you do/don't want tunes that rail on "the man" and you are/aren't into Christian rock). You can include intentionally misleading statements ("I NEVER use a pick"). And then list out your last serious musical relationship, your longest stint in a band and your long term "rock relationship goals" (hobbiest, tour, album, etc.). And be sure to include the following on your profile narrative: "must be willing to play everything I want to play, the way I want it played and to have bass more present in the mix".

Dude, I'd answer that ad! That's the group I want to be in. I'm on my way right now!

Hey, this is TB! You can't just casually mention a bass you own and then not post a pic. Where's your manners man!:)
I posted pictures a while ago. Here's some of the family. The fretless is the one with the black pickguard. The one with a chrome bridge now has chrome pickups and covers. Yeah, I know. More pictures are necessary.

I would answer that as well, but wouldn't get the gig since I am not a guitar player :rollno:
