What's a pick?
Pick or plectrum, used in the most advanced style of bass playing, attempted by many mastered by few. ;)

c’mon guys.:.. no slap I get but no pick?….

I can use a pick, but palm muting is super awkward for me, and something I only occasionally work at. The way my fingers automatically deaden the fatter strings when I play the thinner ones makes for cleaner sounds to me. Plus finger playing gives me a fatter tone. That said, I frequently use a pick when playing quietly and working out parts or coming up with new ideas. I feel a different groove when using a pick. Plus, these big “Thumper” picked keep the sound fat:

…only disadvantage is when they warm up they soften up a little…

when they warm up, throw it to your groupie and get a new one. And a few of us know you really do have a groupie...and she's cute. ;)

A form of pick called pick Mattock, generally just called a Mattock to differentiate. Garden picks are more pointy on both ends an don't really have a blade. I say this because decades ago when working construction one of the laborers came up and was having trouble and asked where the Felix was. No one was really paying attention to him be case he was a bit of a drama queen. He was irritated and kept going from place to place, site trailer, trucks, etc and came back and asked again, "Where's the __ is the Felix?" Several of us stopped to look at him. I laughingly asked him "What are you talking about and what the __ was a Felix?" He started pantomiming using one and describing what it looked like and said, "You know a Felix." We started laughing even more and I told him "that's a Mattock you ___" (sometimes lazily "Mattox"). He wasn't any happier when he finally knew where it was.

I really enjoyed his little series about bassist' on Paramount, he's very genuine and I'm a bit envious that you got to meet him.
He is genuine I think. He was very gracious taking the time before a show to greet me and the inclusion in his book was beyond anything that I ever would have hoped for. I can still hardly believe it happened.
