Thunderbird Club

I’m going to get a fiver. I’d love a Gibson Studio Thunderbird. Too rare. So I am casually looking around. 90% of what I like is standard tuning. So thankfully, I’ll be able to keep GAS down to one.
If your hand works with the neck, get a PRO V and replace the electronics.

I pack inside the case. They pack outside the case. If you pack the outside, they will say you did it wrong if anything happens and deny insurance. I use bubble wrap to fit around the neck so that when they drop the whole thing less is likely to happen.
The local UPS by me will pack it while you watch if they’re not busy. Go at 10:00 AM. And there is a girl at my closest Fed Mess who also asks “is this enough” when packing on the fly. I’ve learned to handle every transaction as its thing. Both can be terrible. And both can be fine. Luck of the draw.

Anyone here a fan of Drop D tuners? I’m buying some Hipshot ultra lights for my T-Bird project and I see they have one. I have a P Bass with a Drop tuner and use it occasionally when I need to go real low.
Does the bird like to be dropped? Ha!

I have one on every bass I own, including three birds. I can’t endorse them enough.

I think I’m the only one in the club…. But I like the Y (batwing?) tuners.
Be kind to me.

I do like the clovers on FSO P’s though

I like your description of Batwing tuners better then calling them Y’s but both are accurate. I have several basses like my ‘71 slot head EB3 that look right with the Batwings and also my re-release EB-1 but my concept for this project is clovers. I do like the look of lollipops on old Fender headstocks too!

I did my 95 4003 as an EADGC as I haven’t felt the need for a low B.

I don’t like wide necks of some 5 strings. And I have not come across a 5 string thunderbird or rickenbacker to see if I like the neck.

I did convert my Flying V bass to BEAD, and then I never played it again. I think I converted it back but I can’t remember now…

I had/have plans to make an ebony nut and convert the ric to BEADG, to possibly make it more attractive for selling it.

I WAS thinking of using tapewounds but now that I have a 4001FL on the way I’m not sure what I’ll do with the 5 string… or which strings I’ll use on the FL.

I recommend considering a Rickenbacker 4003s/5. Pretty close string spacing, nice neck profile (to me anyway) and really good sounding bass. I took off the strings it came with new and put a set of Cobalt Rounds on it and it really gave me the sound I was hoping for. I had intended on putting a set of Cobalt Flats on it, but made a mistake when ordering, and didn’t notice until I final got around to putting them on. Happy accident.

Word is the cobalt rounds will eat frets faster than Willy.

So how is the neck on those 4003s/5’s? I had a German Warwick 6 and you could park a ford ltd widthwise on that shager, and I hated it.

I have a sooper light touch and have never worn down a fret, but with a pair of nippers I can de-fret a board in about 15 minutes…

The only 5 I’ve handled that felt good to me was the Stingray 5. That felt a natural spacing, again to me - who has only tried a few.

Ugh. The new Epiphone 60's Thunderbirds are made in China. :( I guess I should clarify. Epiphone's China facility puts out a good product, I'm not complaining about that. I was told production wasn't shifting and that they would continue to be built in Indonesia, so that's what I have been telling people. Also I have to sell this stuf and MIC makes a difference to a lot of customers, they won't touch it.

Mine is made in Indonesia. That being said Gibson built and owns the Epiphone factory and controls the production and QC 100 %. I have two guitars and one bass out of that factory that are beautiful instruments. Now I don't know if the workers are paid suppressed wages which would suck but they do have many long term skilled people.
