Thunderbird Club

I'm pretty sure there's a sound in a J that I would like and use. It's not like JPJ, Flea, and about a zillion others couldn't find a great sound somewhere lurking in a J. Thing is that I am happy with the sound I get from a Precision, Thunderbird, or any of the other bass guitars I already own. So there's no point in a Jazz for me.

Now, I have no use for tort on an electric bass. That's a different issue.

I've been to a few concerts where the thump of the kick drum obliterates any tone from the bass.

Yeah, it seems it went from not hearing the kick to it becoming all that fills the low end. Sometimes I’m standing right at the sound board and am just puzzled at how they can think that what I’m hearing is good. Maybe it’s the best they can get for the room? I saw Tool at the Bill Graham Civic and was less than impressed with the sound, lots of boomy kick, not a lot of bass, and the bass player’s tone is very present in their music, but it was kinda washed out to my ears.

I’ve also heard some bands that you might think would sound bad live, sound amazing. I saw Slayer outdoors at Shoreline Amphitheater around 10years ago, was totally blown away by how good it sounded. Outdoors!

Haven't been to a concert for ~3years, but the last 2or3 I went to, it seemed like the sound people thought "I've got these monstrous subs, I'm gonna use 'em". They should take off their headphones and hear what the crowd hears. Or maybe they can't anymore.

I take Hearos High Fidelity-Series Long-Term Earplugs to every concert I go to. I don't trust the soundman to protect my hearing...they think loud is the goal!

The strings were coming off. The previous owner used a long scale set and cut the down. They were unraveling.
Oh, yeah. When I put the 45-100 EBCFs on the 67NR, I oiled the neck while it was 'nekkid'. But the other method is handy if yer not removing strings-for whatever reason.
