Thunderbird Club

Once in February and two times in January. Like 4 times between August and December. Like 6 times last April May and July. I pretty much fly out every month or two for a gig. My next one isn't until May right now. I built a pedalboard specifically for those purposes.

And on all the flights the bass was a carry on?

I would rather walk than fly on Southwest. The whole cattle car thing can bite me.

So, essentially a baseball bat with a maple neck designed as a musical instrument/blunt weapon. If I was going to fly with a bass and couldn't have a really stout baggage handler-proof case, I would take the Precision, since it's a club as much as a bass guitar.

The only bass I own that I would consider trying to carry on would be my MIM Mustang in its gig bag. It’s maybe worth $600. It’s small and would fit pretty easily. I wouldn’t really be too upset if something happened to it. It’s a pleasant enough bass, but nothing special. It is pretty indestructible. Frankly, if I really wanted to take it on a plane, I would pop the neck, pack it in a checked suitcase, and avoid the hassle of messing with it as a carry on. Especially on a crowded Southwest bus.

Most everything I fly is Southwest. Pay $15 for priority A class boarding and find an empty bin. The closest to a TBird I've flown with was a Sandberg 48 in its gig bag. I took that and a Kemper as my luggage and carried both on.

For May I have to decide between setting up a 4 string a 1/2 step down or taking my Dark Ray cuz it's the only 5 I own that I can take on a plane. I don't have a bag for the Lull and my Warrior was the first bass I ever bought myself so it rarely leaves the house other than studio work.

But I thought the Hipshot saddles were still too wide for that neck, even at their narrowest setting.
I was looking at the stock saddle spacing and it was 2 1/16". Visually, the E and G look mighty close to the edge of the board. He says no issue with roll off. His neck is 2" at the heel just like mine. It is certainly worth a try since it doesn't require any real surgery. The bottom plate uses metric threads so the Hipshot bolts work.

Not trying be a wisenheimer here.
But what does “flipped the bottom plate”
achieve?
Looks like it’s actually raising the the bridge.
Kinda defeats the purpose of full contact.
It gets that bent string holder out of the way. That is what limits the string height with the stock Greco bridge. Yes, it adds 1/8" under the Hipshot, but I don't know if that makes the strings too high as well. I didn't see a side shot of the stings around the 7-9 frets. If that 1/8" is the only issue at the end of the day, I could put the inserts into the body and ditch the bottom plate. Seems like a fairly painless experiment.

100% Most in a Mono Bag with a carry on suitcase with me. I want to get the nicer Mono Bag so I can get a tick for it and attach my pedalboard.

I’m just surprised the airline allows it.
With flights being as full of passengers as they are, and everyone has gobs of carry ons….

Okey dokey pokey.

What's your band? Do you play in NYC?

They're really nice, but I find the Gator ones just as nice, with more storage space.

I have a gator for guitar that I really like. The Gator and the monos both just came with instruments I bought used. My favorite is an iNcase (I think) that I won from D'addario a LONG time ago.

It's always first come first serve for carry ons. That's why I like Southwest. I can pay $15 to get in the first boarding group every time.

Couple different people from Nashville, El Paso, and wherever else someone needs me (couple different country tribute subs usually). I just realized I haven't been to NYC since I made a college visit to St John's.

Oh, yeah. I had an Incase Tour Bag and it was insanely great. Too small for a lot of basses, though. My Carvin fit fine, but oddly a lefty Jazz Bass wouldn't, though a righty would. Go figure.

Yeah, it's definitely a snug one. But I LOVE that pocket for the backpack. I used to fit a Tone hammer head and all my cables in that spot.

This is a Pelican V800 double rifle case. Interior dims are 53" x 16" x 6". I knew that Bruce Johnson offers these as a case option with his scroll basses. I just had to dig a little to find the pics. The SKB cases I posted earlier are virtually the same thing. One's slightly shorter. One's slightly longer. The Pelican is actually a good deal cheaper though at $230.

Kinda the opposite of this

Deal of the Day!

Those who know me understand that I’m an Epi Fan Boy. But I do love my Gibsons.

Anywho. This a stellar deal for a new (second) Epi IV. $360 includes shipping. Great as a mod platform or someone’s first Thunderbird. Add a set of Lollars, or the Gibson Moderns that are now available, or a set of the Gibson Reissues and have a wonderful Thunderbird at a reasonable price. Were I not on a buying hiatus, I’d pull the trigger myself, mod it, and paint it Pelham Blue.

I like how they've given you a way to see that gorgeous mahogany.:smug:
