I've had to play "Ipanema" in so many keys(C#/Db is supposedly the original)because of singer's ranges that-once I know what key they're in-I go by relative position rather than try to think "wuttinnahell's the next effin chord?".

just couldn't remember what that middle climb was…. cycle of fourths?….
anyway, whatever it was, it got "faked" ok ….

"Desafinado" is another……always shocks me how arrangers can condense bossa novas with a gazillion chords into "fake book" format with just four or five….

A lotta the time they'll leave out some of the 'color' notes-#11, -13, etc. that are covered by the melody.
One tune I've never been able to 'get' is Billy Joel's New York State of Mind. I think he just noodled a bunch of chords to p155 people off then wrote lyrics.

Not sure what those go for but I got my white Epi VP from guitar center used, shipped to my local store for $346. They often seem to under-price stuff. I think someone posted a pic of a black one at a GC for like $440 earlier this weekend.

When they don't know the difference between the standard Epi and the VP/60s. It happens a lot. What is sad is you know the person who sold it to them didn't get fair value for it.

I'm blessed with a pretty good 'ear' so if they know their key and tell me what it is, I gots a good chance of hittin' it.
Oh. And don't just say 'standard key'. One band I was in for about 8 years would decide on a song, one of many in "F" for example, and we'd say "we haven't done anything in "B" for awhile", so "B" it was. Mostly just to challenge ourselves.

but those one can follow with the ear as they are so familiar to us…..to put things in perspective "desafinado" literally means out of tune in portuguese….
