IIRC it’s just a humbucker, the exposed pole pieces are not part of the coils, it has dual rails. I think this was discussed in the SG club a few weeks back.Is the Model one a sidewinder?

Never. What I've experienced time & time again is using the same bass, the same amp, the same pedals, the same settings - and depending on the night (at rehearsals specifically) the sound varies. I personally feel it's the molecules in the air at any time. (humidity, temperature, etc) Seriously. Some nights the sound is awesome/perfect - other nights it's ok, and yet other nights it's a struggle to get it all to sound good. Then there's live - which is ALWAYS a crap-shoot.
I'm sure much of it has to do with what we are playing through. I will say that I think my hearing is sensitive and may account for my very finicky approach to what I hear and want to hear. That said, I'm not claiming to be correct. I have a couple spectrum analyzers on my phone and iPad. I should do a sample of the Power Steels before taking them off and thin one with the Power Wounds. I will try to remember to do that when I change strings before Wed. May prove I'm way off. May prove apps aren't any good!Man. We hear so differently. To me the Power Steels don’t lack in the least for mids. I tend to exaggerate the eq of mids over lows though. So who knows.
Yes, in addition to all the variables, I seems like merely the temperature in the room makes what sounded right the night before sound wrong. Heck, sometimes I’m convinced my mood has something to do with what I’m hearing.
Yeah I’m pretty used to playing lousy sounding rooms! There’s a Fisherman’s hall here that has a stage in the corner of a this low ceiling, hard surface rectangular room. That too - no debate. Which is a thing we who perform live need to confront. We need to rise above/overcome any "that gig/that room/that mood" issues. It's what separates a professional, or a band attempting to appear/sound/perform "professionally", from the rest. I can only relate this having performed for a number of years and early-on 'coming off' as "unprofessional. As long as you/a band can 'learn from errors.." and work to eliminate such - it's what eventually leads to a good, professional performance.
awesome approach…..do you have links for those analyzers? could potentially be used to characterize pups like we talked about years ago…I'm sure much of it has to do with what we are playing through. Do like I did: develop hearing loss. Then you'll be happy just to hear it at all.THIS is why I have gone through so much $$$$ on bass gear. Searching for the ever elusive “perfect” tone.
I live alone. [Stuff] stays wherever I leave it.My wife has banished music stuff to the basement, for the most part. I even bought a guitar that I had hoped to leave upstairs so I would play it more, but that's downstairs, too. Ah, well. I have my subterranean realm, she makes sure it doesn't leak out. She's probably got a point, since the house would be overrun with my toys if she didn't make me put them away when I'm done.
That, I think is where I’m at. I hear broad differences and know what I like.Do like I did: develop hearing loss. Then you'll be happy just to hear it at all.
Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor; don't play one on TV; have never stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.
Seeing Brian @bylar13 pop in reminded me that I forgot to mention the new ep they just released. Please check it out!
