Thunderbird Club

I've also had this happen
I’ve tightened every possible screw. That’s not it. My plan is to swap out the D string from my PBass, if it’s long enough! These freakishly long runs from the nut to the tuner on this beautiful bird concern me. If it still resonates, I’ll remove the truss rod cover and adjust the truss rod JUST A BIT to see if that has any change. If it still buzzes, I’ll take off the D and G strings, and swap out the tuners.

I have to get it all done and decided on by about 10:00am, four hours from now, if I’m to be able to return the used instrument in 48 hours, per store policy.

I did this today. If it works out, good. Stoner Doom...

Don't know about pairing it with the Hartke (8 ohms), but it'll be interesting to try it with the 4 ohm 2x15 and the Ampeg PR410 HLF.
I played it before I took it home, and I'm believing the Bird's gonna like this one.
I will comment as this saga continues.
George, this doesn't mean I'm not looking into your Mesa Subway...
I mean Walkabout!
But I'm liking your Markbass CMD121 combo with the 212 ext cab idea, after hearing the combo/112 the other night.

Update: I tightened every screw I could see on the body, including tuners, mounts, pick guards, tailpiece, PUPs to body, strap buttons, etc…there were four screws that mount the saddle-adjacent PUP to the body that were not capable for being tightened, they are pretty much loose and I’ll have to remove them and plug the existing holes with wood/glue to get them to tighten properly, but that’s not where the buzzing does seem to be coming from. When I play a string, I can hear some buzzing coming from inside the headstock, and perhaps from the truss rod cover area. I removed it to look inside, and there was some paint/junk material I carefully cut away to expose the end of the truss rod. I cleaned it with a small bottle brush and removed any dust, but the rattle sound continues, as does the resonator sound from my Mesa Boogie only on the “D” string.

I’m including a photo of the body and I’ve circled the four screws on the PUP that won’t tighten.

I’m going to hope that when I put new strings on it, the resonator goes away.

I’m hoping that everything is fixable…but now I’m wondering if I found maybe the reason why whomever owned it for a short amount of time got rid of it! This bass WANTS me though, I can tell. So I’m not giving up on it yet.View attachment 7171006
If you strum that string, is the buzz only audible through the amp, or dp you hear it without amplification?

If it's audible without an amp, does it go away if you touch your finger to any of your suspect parts while the note is still ringing?

I seem to remember you saying it buzzes on every fret of the D string. To me, this rules out the possibility of a sympathetic vibration.

What happens if you play a note on the D string and then push down on the section of string between the tailpiece and bridge? Does the buzz continue or go away?

Thanks Jeff! It's our one, so far, down rocker. I think we're going to lean this way a little more, displace the mopey sludge just a notch or two. 😁
I'm pretty fortunate to have gotten together with this crew.
Just gotta get the amp thing together.
I’d like to hear some of your more “mopey sludge” doom! Can you share another video?

Great band indeed!
And i hear ya on getting the amp thing sorted.

I love my Mesa D-800+ and Subway 115 cabinet. It’s so light and easy to transport too. Although, if I had to purchase it again, I’d get the D-350. I would enjoy having an amp for my quiet practice times that didn’t have a fan running all the time!

This is one of many reasons why i got the Quilter V803.
The master actually controls the power output.
So it's like a variable power control.
From apartment practice to a live gig.

Here's a mopey one! "Grudge"... Then we end the set with an Iggy and the Stooges number. 😃

As mentioned, bass is anemic. It was difficult to hear myself most of the time. Amazing how your confidence can take a bullet when your sound is compromised. That should never be part of a performance. Ehhh... Can't wait to make it right.

Which Walkabout do you have? I'm doing homework.
I just got the Peavey Alpha, partly because a friend had held into it for me, and it was important to follow through. I had been gassing for it, but I'm not sure it's what I actually need. After hearing my sound at that gig the other night I'm really ready to get rid of everything and make a smart purchase...
Not sure if I posted this here, but if you’re in Northern California, there’s a “used” Walkabout at Loud and Clear music. Still has tags on it and years of dust, so while it’s “used” my hunch is it’s rarely, if ever, been used.

Thanks for the pointer, but I'm in Rhode Island. 😁

Iggy’s work is always a crowd-pleaser. Good job!!!
Why do they always put the bass player in the back or on the path to the restrooms???

Didn’t know a Hipshot would fit with the craw. I have one sitting on the self with no place to go…would it buy me anything on my VP?
Only if you have an intonation issue.

Great music Roger. The singer reminds me of Todd Park Mohr of Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Love it!

Well, looks like I’ll keep it! The temporarily donated D string from my Fender P-Bass plays in the TBird without any of that weird freaky-@ss resonating sound!!! So today the EBCFs will arrive at a nearby Amazon locker, and I’ll go fetch them to restring this lovely instrument. I’m so happy I can keep it!

And I’m so glad my P-Bass was willing to step up and donate a string to help the family’s newest member!

Can’t wait to get it restrung and see what those EBCFs feel and sound like.

You must have great hearing. I can barely hear the fan in my Mesa when I turn it on in a dead quiet room. I don’t notice it at all once I start playing. My SVT is a different story. That things sounds like I’m in a wind tunnel.

Although I’m playing an Epiphone VP IV, when I close my eyes, in my mind, I’m playing this:

Do any Thunderbird Club members own this strikingly beautiful bird???

Glad it was just a string.

Actually, I have hearing loss in the 4K range. But, I’m particularly sensitive to fan/motor sounds. I also have relentless tinnitus, which I think somehow makes me more sensitive to some frequencies. I don’t notice it during band rehearsal or practice if there’s other instrumentation along with what I’m playing.
