Thunderbird Club

Nice! I ran cross country for a very short time. I was so bored I quit. ADHD or something maybe. I should have tried sprinting. I was really fast for a short while. In playing football only had one guy ever catch me from behind. Even then he dove and slapped my foot and I tripped into the end zone. I can still walk fast. Sometimes. If nothing is hurting.

Had HS science teacher (old football coach), who was 70+ and ran 10 miles several times a week and ran full marathons. He was a machine.
I ran x-country two years in high school. Then I discovered the bass. And pot. 🤪

I could run the 40 yard dash at 4 and some change my Sophomore year, the track coach really bugged me about joining the team, but by then I had my first bass (EB-0 copy) and was learning how to smoke various things........... 🙀

Such potential.
Good on you for realizing it!

I was a very awkward teenager.

Budding Queen of the locker room......................

Worked out ok.

4.8 40 in full pads. Now, it takes me longer than that to sit down.

Yep, this. Usually it quickly reaches the point of "well that's good enough, time to start playing". Then, when you do get that really good (to your ear) tone, and everything sounds pretty well balanced, it's a bonus.
Once I start playing in a live situation almost all of the "tone shaping" goes
out the window. Things move too fast and the "mix" is always different depending on so many additional, non-controllable factors.

Since I am wearing earplugs at practice now, most of the "tone shaping " in that space is moot w/ -30db earplugs in…

If I can hear myself, I'm already ahead of the game.
Have you tried in ears? Imagine hearing as much of your direct bass tone as you want in the live mix.

Most places I get to play only have a pa for vocals, and some do not even have a sound person. When I do have the luxury of some FOH, as long as there is a floor monitor in front of me, I’m good. I usually have no problem hearing myself, I’m lucky that the musicians in both my bands are sensitive to being too loud. Sometimes to a fault. It’s more about getting the ideal tone in any given situation. Sometimes it just can’t be found in time before it’s time to play.
