I've found humbuckers don't really need shielding. I still do it.

Me either. Only humbuckers that ever made noise were the TB+ with the tapes on, and neck only. It wasn't much, but I recall a little noise at church where there are all kinds of electricals going on. I haven't noticed it in a good while, for whatever reason. It was not enough to be noticed except when nothing was going on. I assume the tapes were preventing some grounding maybe, as it never did it until I but those on.

The nylon wrap is an insulator, isolating the bridge ground from your fingers.

*that bar: even a Cort with an Aguilar humbucker (mm style) in the bridge, and a SD stacked Jazz in the neck buzzed hummed and crackled (unshielded) .
Picked up a well shielded Jazz single coil Squier with singles, grounded pole pieces even, and no noise : unless I soloed a pickup:
Lesson learned? Shields work!

NECESSARY? No, but extremely helpful, cheap and easy to do, so why not?

My Thunderbird got a new pickguard today. I'll probably buy black screws so that it matches the trussrod cover.

Very nice! Where did the new pickguard come from? Did the screw hole pattern match up?

It would look smashing good on mine!

There was an additionnal hole, but I didn't need to use a drill, I just pushed and turned gently with a screwdriver.
