Thunderbird Club

Congratulations !
I have chased the Steve Harris tone since I first started playing.
I try not to spend *too* much time on tone chasing but sometimes it happens. Far better to work on chops. Still, for some things, you really need to at least get close. And some tones just haunt you until you find them. At least they do me.
90% is his playing technique.
The last 10% is magic.
I used to think 50% was gear. That number keeps dropping, and for more than I ever expected, that percentage approaches zero -- assuming you have reasonable gear, the fingers, and/or magic.

Which is why I pooh pooh the idea that you gotta have a P bass. Nothing wrong with them[1], but you don't have to have one.

[1] Other than them not being Thunderbirds, of course.

Someone like Chuck is absolute proof that it doesn’t matter what bass you play or what amp you’re playing through…….

I don’t have his chops, nor near his dexterity and abilities.
But I’m not married to a certain type of bass or amp.

I can get close to, if not nail my tonal preferences with being the reasonable player that I am. ;)

Someone like Chuck (there is no one like Chuck) is proof that it doesn't matter what bass Chuck plays or what amp Chuck is playing through. Chuck makes it look effortless. It's definitely not effortless for all of us. Doesn't mean we can't, just that it takes us more effort and time to get there (most days).

And you're pretty darned good yourself, sir!

Shipped the grandsons back to Amman and retook my music corner. Not room, not basement, not shed, but beats my small corner in the garage.

sweet words Sir... it can be SO subjective and personal....take a guy like Britain May, ONLY played that custom guitar (later built by Guild) he built with this dad his whole career and then you got guys like Jeff Beck who would travel without a guitar and rent or borrow one when they got to the gig...all very personal and whatever works for one imho. ..this said, although I prefer Beck, when he was asked what he thought of Brian May, his response was, "folks play his licks more than they play mine"...

As are you Sir....

I've worked on it off and on for a while now and never really been happy about it. Yesterday I wasn't feeling my Dead jam so I switched to the ABB. I happened to be on the VP and just backed the tone off and was suddenly circling the target. I just fiddled by instinct and there it was. The chain didn't nail it, but it was very close. The average listener definitely wouldn't notice a difference. Color me thrilled.
Now if only I had chops like that dude had.
To play like him would be the stuff of dreams having dreams. He was such a musical player.

Put the wife on here and we'll straighten her out on this corner nonsense.
Mike goes first. He's farthest away....
(Jeff is too safe being an ocean away.)

Monterey (Pacific Grove) jumping with car week ending today :( ....summer end party?..
cool double setter ...

The boy and the girl are in the process of moving to Monterey. Car week looks like fun to me, but they have been tangled up in it all week and are not thrilled with it. As he says, the whole point is making traffic worse. I hope they settle in there so I can visit them during car week, dive in Monterey Bay, visit the aquarium, and all that. That whole areas is beautiful.

It really is. Our daughter and fam were there a few years.. We loved visiting, they loved living there. Just watch out in the fog.
