love'em in black, did they ever make a sunburst Bicen? don't think I've ever seen one....I keep saying I need to get better pics of mine and promptly forget to actually do it. You can't see the wear in this photo.

I've played them in stores, typically the higher $$$ heads. Sounded good. Never enough to make me consider one. They had a cab I liked with mixed drivers. Again, sounded good in a store. I don't ever recall using one live.Tried various models in different settings over the years and Mesa bass amplification plain doesn't do it for me.....love their guitar amps..
Yes, you can always have Pat as last resort it no happy. All good input! Thanks.
I suspect I’ll go one of two routes…
Option 1 - two part wood epoxy fill to get the shape back then a couple of thin coats of color matched poly with a clear coat or two in the effected area. Won’t be perfect, but it’ll pass as a stage bass and be fine for gigging.
Option 2 - turn it over to Pat Wilkins with instructions to add a forearm contour that will eliminate the chunk issue and have him reshoot it in an aged white with a soft relic job to make it look about the same age as the neck. Will be perfect but not cheap or quick.
Right now I’m leaning towards option 1 with the thought of punting to option 2 and turning it over to Pat if I’m not happy with it or if I mess it up.
Yes they did sunburst finishes as well.love'em in black, did they ever make a sunburst Bicen? don't think I've ever seen one....

Oh Hell yeah!
Congratulations George - Love that Road Warrior!
Congrats Dude!...seems like my Greco IV is getting less and less live time since I got mine..... curious to hear your thoughts on the winders...it's got rounds? Flats?...looks beautiful with that wear....
Beautiful - congrats!
I have found the most worn basses are often the ones with the "magic"
100%
Congrats George. That T’bird is quite the looker!
Sweet!. Congrats!
I’m lovin it! I took a big risk on a mail order purchase of a heavily used (and hopefully not abused) 46 year old bass. But I was able to get the price down enough to make the risk worth it. She’s been rode hard, but it’s all legit player wear and not neglect or abuse, still very original condition as well.…..Congrats on the '79 Bird!! All that player wear makes me think you got a good one!
According to Fly Guitars:
1976 1977 1978 1979 total
Ebony 91 301 12 7 411
Natural 224 237 6 467
Tobacco
Sunburst 228 605 8 841
White 127 9 136
Total 1855
I tried to cut and paste the table. The format won’t carry over. You get the drift…

you are what seems like an incurable SS kinda guy as am I...convinced a lot of it has to do with that....this is one of the best sounding bass heads ever imho....I've played them in stores, typically the higher $$$ heads. GK was a head I always wanted to like and never was able to get what I wanted for some reason. I tried a number of times, moved knobs and gave up thinking they are just not for me, but would try again with the same results.
Interesting.., I used a GK head once in a jam-session and was underwhelmed - amps are like basses, chosen very personally and selectively. But coming from a guy who knows amps inside out (along with being a bitchin' player!) I hope to hear one someday based on your insights. I started out on SS amps and gravitated to tube-pre & full-on tube amps later.you are what seems like an incurable SS kinda guy as am I...convinced a lot of it has to do with that....this is one of the best sounding bass heads ever imho....

I know, right and slow, use semis as shields. If by that you mean via Pear Blossom Highway out of Lancaster/Palmdale, please drive carefully. Lots of nutjobs on that road, especially at night. Sake travels!
Andy did it to me againBeing the obnoxious Mesa fanboy around here, I’d be remiss if I didn’t formally make sure you all know about the latest offering:
Pics?Well Marcus, I was not hearing myself play so I did what any bass player worth a set of strings would do, I cranked the gain. The drummer got louder, so...I cranked some more. All the way, in fact. The problem was there was too many sound waves building up and bouncing around in the 12ax7 tube so they could be amplified (that whole tube watts as louder thing). And I hit an open E and it was too much. The sound waves bouncing around were just too much and the glass tube exploded sending one of the pins right into my outer ear. But you shoud have seen the drummer. He go both plates and the getter. Wasn't pretty. I should have known better that to overload the tube like that.

CalTrans has been resurfacing it since spring. This week they had two lanes closed off in both directions for several miles north of Castaic. They’ll break pretty soon for winter then pick it back up next year. It was sorely needed. But a total pain. There are a couple alternate routes around it that take as long as being stuck in the traffic, but at least you’re moving. You're better off, grapevine stinks (bad)...,Good Luck!
I think the 70s Thunderbirds are under appreciated. That they don't sound exactly like a 60s turns many off. But they sound great (mine does, which is the only one I recall playing), just a tad softer than the 60s predecessors. Heavy is common factor. I don't think I cold play 3 45s with it or would want to. Not sure I would do 2 45s with it. Would depend on whats hurting that day....I’m lovin it! I took a big risk on a mail order purchase of a heavily used (and hopefully not abused) 46 year old bass. But I was able to get the price down enough to make the risk worth it. I’ll have to snap a pic of the treble side of the fretboard, I’ve never actually seen a bass played so hard for so many years in the money frets that it began to scallop the edge of the fretboard. The frets are super low but still perfectly playable and good action with zero fret buzz.
The strings are rounds and they seem to be a good match for the pickups. I will say, I don’t think I have any other birds in my flock that are nearly as sensitive to a right hand dig in as this bird, the volume level goes up orders of magnitude with just a bit of digging, a very very expressive bass.
