Thunderbird Club

My first "gig" tomorrow, using my Epi T-Bird and I'm really excited even though I'm basically playing with a bunch of strangers, and I'm using my T-Bird to play a chill religious song. But, first time ever performing in front of an audience, so it's big for me.
Just finished the song. It went quite well except for a big flub. I recovered quickly, fortunately.

Performing felt really nice.

Looks great! What pickups are in this?
My nephew wanted something as flexible as a Jaguar so I took an old Epiphone Custom Shop Special Edition, which has LP size pickups and replaced the stock pickups with Bartolini dual coil splitting humbuckers mounted in a Seymour Duncan Triple Shot trim rings that allow series parallel switching and north/south and dual coil switching. All that goes into a tone pot that is connected to a three way switch to select three different capacitor values. It’s a super flexible design with tons of different voices.

Most importantly, it has purple silks.

That Trace just looks so inviting and intriguing. How would you compare it to your ABM? Different animal or similar except for...?
I admit I'm a little surprised at how I have my 300 sounding great now for every bass I've used with it. At first it was only a few that the 500 tightened up ('06 and '55 Pbass and some Js), but now that I have the 300 figured out, I'm kind of amazed how much I'm loving it with about every bass. None sound just "good." I've even begun wondering about selling the Ampeg v-4b av which I keep at home with the older 500 on top.

I would say that they have a very similar "baked in" sound which is a big plus for me, the Trace just sounds great with a bass plugged in, no pedals needed to get great tone. I found very small adjustment to the EQ panel made a big difference. My only problem with it is that at least three times playing live it has gone intermittent, and then come back, which becomes an issue that needs addressing. Chuck has looked it over and found nothing wrong with it, which great, but now that I have the Ashdown 300 the Trace will be my practice amp paired with an SWR 4x10 in my upstairs guitar room.
The Ashdown is robust and is loud enough with plenty of headroom for show my band will take on, we always run the bass thru the FOH so no need for a real high wattage amp, it sounds good on stage and downstairs in the rehearsal room.
The FOH guy at Aurora Borealis is quite good, the last few times we've played there he's had me sounding pretty clear and articulate, not boomy, the lows are rolled back a bit which really helps the clarity onstage and out front
Here's the EQ presently, I have the "shape" engaged, the input volume is way down as almost every bass I own will peg the input VU much past this, Live, I play hard. Output volume varies.

This from a the most recent show, from the far side of the stage - I'm using my fingers only.

Same night, other side of the stage with a pick, I like the bit of klank!

Great. You didn't? ;)
Now that you know you're human and make mistakes you can relax and not be shocked by them. I make them all the time. If I play 5 songs, I will have something I wasn't happy about. The art of it is learning how to recover. I never had lessons so maybe there are some out there on that. But don't be discouraged--we all make them. I make enough for several, but generally can get back and others don't noticed, or notice much anyway. Pros make mistakes and they largely play the same songs several times a week. So don't sweat it, but always try to improve and minimize them. But as you stretch and try new things on songs, mistakes are gong to happen. It's part of learning. Keep at it and play on! Thanks for the report.

Thanks, V. Very nice. Have you tried more tube? I have mine maxed and it seems to add a little 3-D sparkle and some top end. You might try 2 o'clock or more sometime to see if you like what it adds. You may or may not drive it into OD. You like more top-end and clarity than I do and you might find that setting to you liking.

that Trace is a great amp, like V says, "baked in" tone resulting from years of Mark Gooday asking bass players what they want as opposed to just giving them a high power amp driven with an EQ.... that thinking went into Ashdown amps as well....V's Trace measures to spec (210W @ 4 Ohm/156W @ 8 Ohm at 1kHz) but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be enough for her needs....it's unintuitive but a much higher power rated cab can actually hurt a smaller amp....in this case, that Goliath 6 x 10 is rated at 1000 Watt at 4 Ohm and it may be a little much for that little amp causing it to go into thermal protection which I think is the case as the larger 300 Watt Ashdown works fine.....some may say, "a big amp will fry a small speaker, why would a big speaker harm a small amp?" and the best way to visualize it is to imagine a small car (spkr) with a big engine (amp) coasting down a hill with no gas applied...the large rotating mass of the motor will slow down the small car to the point the motor will stay under the rated redline and avoid damage.....if on the other the car is much heavier (same motor) going down that same hill may push the motor pass the rated redline damaging it.....an amp under these persisting conditions will go into thermal shutdown and come out of it when the transient disappears making it seem like it's "cutting out".....then again, it could have been anything...a cable, brownout etc etc..... for now, it's my practice amp till the Queen summons it back to the court.....thx V!

Sounds like it would work just fine with my cabs.

Mark knows what he's going. Never thought I find a head that sounds as good as my Ampeg V-4BH Classic (intended to be the little bro of the SVT and not like the 70s V-4B), but I could use the ABMs and be happy. Great heads and under appreciated IMO. I don't see the Classic going anywhere because in a few situations you can really hear the all tube difference, but I could see the V-4B AV leaving at some point. Just doesn't sound as good (to me) as the BH Classic. But is one of the best looking heads ever made.

I put Ernie ball flat cobalts on my NR this morning. I did like the Chromes, but felt like I need a touch more bite. So far so good! I have practice later today with the band, so we’ll see how they sound. I’m sure they need some break-in time too.
well this was supposed to be posted earlier today. The outage seemed to have delayed that... hah!

Practice sounded good! Still a lot of zing on these, but I heard more of the bitey growl I was wanting for. Gonna rock these for a few weeks and let them settle in. So far so good!
