Thunderbird Club

I bought a Fender CIJ '51P RI new in '06* and liked it for a while - it did the P-bass thing really well. But I eventually turned it into this (T2K MkII) - needless to say, much more versatile.

*one of the few basses I bought new -

And I like that. Would love to play and hear that.

Well... People say that but I don't think it's large. Feels like my basically '55 which I think is great. Nice and round, very comfortable. But those can vary a little. I've played other '58 Pbasses that didn't feel much like mine. I find the early/mid 60s Fender necks my least favorite. They are seem wider but may not be but are flatter. My '64 Pbass has a late '63 neck and it's like that. It's comfortable but would prefer a little thicker in a perfect world. But that obviously doesn't exist. Fender says the nut on the Squire Pbass is 1.685 (42.8mm). If anyone were to think that really large, the nut on the new NR is 1.6 (40.64mm)
I don’t necessarily mind wide. But it needs to be flat.

My wife asked about me retiring a couple years ago and I told her I've worked my whole life and don't know remember what it's like to not work. The only time I don't remember working was when I was a little kid. By 11 was doing regular work for people not long after that I was doing simple maintenance for two guys that owned a bunch of apartment buildings. One was a slum lord. We collected rent weekly. One of us would go to the front the other out back for those who wanted to live there free. I will say he treated everyone fair and never took advantage of anyone. They will in parts of town that should have been avoided, but even criminals had some morals back then! Lost of stories there. But I'm not sure I'd know what to do to not have to get up and have things to do. No wonder I'm tired an wore out! I earned it!
Yeah. I was hustling from the time I was 10. Mowed lawns in the neighborhood. I could make $50- $100 a month depending on the season doing that. Went up and down the street washing cars. Also babysat starting around twelve. Played in bands starting in 7th grade. Got a job at Kinney Shoes when I was 16; that was “real money.” Always had something going during college.

I’m done. Fried to a crisp.

Kinney shoes... :)

Pre-teen neighborhood paper route, 1st real job as a busboy in a local Italian restaurant (fond memories), bike shop / twice (commission work~ never great at sales but took advantage of employee discounts on gear), furniture warehouse/delivery (Omaha Nebraska), dishwasher (upper NY state), some art sales from gallery shows wherever I lived, graphic artist for a Chicago firm related to a Trek bicycle account... the rest/bulk self-employed house painter/decorative artist (KC, Chicago, Cincinnati, SF/Bay Area). Still work for a couple long-term clients but mostly retired. Music, bass designing/building, cycling and life in general... never bored.

I wish I could retire now! One thing I won’t be is bored. Plenty to do.

Radius of the FB or back of the neck? If back of the neck you would love my '64. Wide, thin/flat on the back.
I briefly had a Peavey B-Quad, their most sophisticated (18v active w/piezo bridge) bass they ever made, from the '90s. It had a carbon fiber, 24 fret fretless neck - loved that neck. Reminded me of my '63-'64 T-birds 100%. One (fretted neck) came up for sale later but for over $1k... hard pass. Maybe someday I'll build a vintage T-bird bass clone and have my SF luthier Dan Ransom make a neck-thru neck for it like my '64... or not. I have every possible neck profile on the basses I own... I love them all - no deal breakers.

Safe travels! Daughter coming in from Boston this week. We’re excited to see her.

But is it “Slim Taper” ?
Likely so, but I have no clue. I never paid much attention to most of the neck nuances and never was able to match with the stated shapes. To me they were wide and thick or thin, narrow and almost always nicely rounded (Js and Thunderbirds). My '64 that's wide and thin was similar to an early 2000s G&L L2k. Had a Lakland Skyline once and it was more narrow and thin--but nothing like a Geddy Lee neck, which was narrow and really thin.

Fly back through Seattle sometime, I'll buy dinner and you can play some basses.
