Poly does yellow in time as far as I know. I don't think it's a bad thing, but YMMV.
I'm pretty tired of blek, whut, and burpst as color options...but they are what moves. I was in the specialty cutlery industry for a decade. Market research showed that customers wanted more color options in pocket knives, so companies geared up and offered them. They were good shades of good colors, and I liked 'em a lot. But when it came to buying time, stainless and black finishes outsold the colors ten or twenty to one. It's gotta be just as hard, if not harder, to do something new in music gear, where guitarists want brand new, state of the art of 1959 stuff.

yeah, but still... jeeeeeez, ya know. My GC has a million dollars worth of Les Pauls priced over $2,500.00 hanging on the wall, plus a metric crap ton of "regular" Gibson 6-stringers... but not one Gibson bass. I asked them if they were gonna get one of the new Epi VPs in stock when they're released. "No" was the reply. It's no wonder Skwar, Ibby, an so on, are the number one sellers. That's all that's being offered! If you don't include used gear... you can walk into store "A", and see what's available in stores B, C, & D. Guitar Center has more of them in stock than the others, but models, pricing, and frequently even finishes are exactly the same across the board. Rainbow Music carries Rickenbacker, but they're a small outfit, and usually only keep 1 in stock. I'm tired of cheese burgers! I want stuffed pheasant on a bed of garlic roasted potatoes with a side of seasonal veggies and a Caesar salad, topped off with a slice of caramel mocha cheesecake, a belt of Grande Marnier & a good stogie!!! Is that too much to ask?The bottom line is that the low end sells much more quickly, and in much greater numbers, than the top and does. That's true in every segment of every market. It's also why the typical guitar shop only had a few basses and they're made by Ibby, Skwar, and maybe MIM Bumper Yazz Basses. That stuff moves. It's a rare shop that can afford to stock lots of the top end; it ties up cash flow and doesn't turn very fast...especially in a soft economy.

Keeping in mind that I'm only a few months into my journey as a bass player... I'd really like to find a place where I can walk in & see a good variety of basses. I wanna get my hands on 'em & see what's what. I wanna feel the necks, compare pickups, & all that stuff, just to get a sense of what the various manufacturers and models are bringing to the table.
That's a good problem to haveThanks! That's why I only have one Thunderbird. This ticks all the boxes and the Lollar pickups sound great. I have been eyeing Gibson Expolrer basses recently, since I have a second set of Lollar t-bird pickups waiting to be installed in something...

Except for the Gibson they're all Epis. Stock and no chroming planned so nothing on most guy's collections here.
Can someone post a shot of their AW bird? My paranoia is telling me that it's getting creamier by the day. Looked up an old low-fi shot and it seemed like the pg and the finish are nearly matching.
Don't think poly yellows, but as said: Paranoia.
Home alone for the next at least 24 hours, no neighbours... it's about to get LOUD

Seriously? Even the big New York stores don't keep a good variety in house? How are people supposed to learn about what they're buying. I mean... ya can't find out how something feels or sounds from a spec sheet or an online posting...[/QUOTE]Hate to say it Fix, but @Larry V is right, gone are the days with gobs and gobs of good stuff in the stores.
It aint the '70's on 48th Street anymore.
edit; of course unless you have deep pockets with wads of cash, then you're typical overpriced vintage shop will be happy to sell.
Ya know... a number of people seem to not be so fond of the yellowing of their white birds. I personally love it! As long as it's the factory finish. To me, it's like the "checking" that you see on (for instance) a '66 SG. Is it a "flaw"... technically, yes... but it's a natural occurrence that comes from the materials used at the time. I find that age adds immeasurable character and mojoBetter lighting of my Gibson, via iPhone camera. It is a bit creamyView attachment 1177865
The first one is partially due to the warm colour light that are in my living room along with fighting the natural light coming in the windows behind the basses. The second one is much closer to what it really looks like, maybe a bit creamier than the pic but not much.Hmm it's close to the second pic already. First one looks super creamy.
Don't know what it is, but when Gibsons turn creamy they kinda look nice, but any FSO I've seen that's cream or turned(?) looks like poop.
Hope if/when the whitebird goes the cream route it takes the mothership one.
PS: Guess a smoking guitarist won't help. Big reason why the blackbird is my main rehearsal bass.
Not really man, the usual suspects carry pretty much the same as you describe where you live, the real emphasis is on FSO guitars and spendy Les Pauls, usually not much in the way of basses.

Yeah... I'm right there with ya man. I've already gone off about the "road worn" and "relic" BS more than once. I'm tempted to right now, but I'll resist. My feelings on the matter are well known.I'm with you on that!
I hate when people "relic" their instruments
I believe you and I have had this very discussion about 150 pages backYeah... I'm right there with ya man. I've already gone off about the "road worn" and "relic" BS more than once. I'm tempted to right now, but I'll resist. My feelings on the matter are well known.
