I'd probably use my 70' P if I was doing a lot of early Rush. Pretty much nails that tone with the Harris sig Duncans. Like a few others here, I'm not too keen on my Jazz. It's a Squier VM '77. Love the way it plays, hate the tone. Maybe time for pickups.

I like Fender Custom Shop 60s Jazz Pickups and a series/ parallel mod to fatten a Jazz up.

We at Thunderbird Club are capable of communicating from within and from way outside of the box without conflict or prejudice and if all hell broke loose between the clubs we will be the last club standing. If I did not own a Thunderbird I would buy one just to hang out here with you awesome folks, Ive said that before. Ive been on TB for a number of months and found a list of clubs that I could and should also belong to and even had to ask for a number and still have not got a reply. Im totaly fine with that, I get everything I need right here. Everybody I need to communicate with is right here, hell I learned more about a P bass in here than numbers of threads Ive read elswhere.

The Spector Club is pretty similar to our group. They seem very tight, dedicated to their bass of choice, welcoming of new members, will help each other out when needed, and are very knowledgeable. They are also about as chatty as this group!! I couldn't keep up between the two so I just come in here. I rarely read any other threads on TB aside from this club, classifieds, and a couple of other random threads that I have been following for a couple of years. There is just too much animosity out in the gen-pop and I HATE drama. TB is a great resource for bassists but the drama gets very deep.

I think our biggest asset aside from playing an individualist's bass is our leader being a drag queen. First hurdle for some poopholes.

But I do like a good Precision.

I may not have a need or desire for one but I can still appreciate one. Most of my favourite players are P players, with the exception of Ron Blair and I don't know where that lovely warm full tone comes from. Maybe it's the neck pup only on the J.

Problem I'm having with my Jazz right now.

I know it sounds like a Jazz and it has it's place but it just sounds so damned anemic in comparison to the Bird, P, and Schecter. Maybe it's just not my thing. Dropping more cash into it doesn't seem right to me. I'll probably unload it at some point.

Humbuckers would require woodwork. May be try Warmoth body?

I have a series/parallel in my J w/Super 55's - never have an issue of it not sounding full enough. I also have an '85 Fender Performer with its own proprietary pu's and it sounds a bit less full as were the nature of them but with d.i. and amp adjustments I can dial it into 'full' focus.

Not necessarily. There are stacked and split J sized humbuckers.

Yeah, this I know and you are absolutely correct. I was thinking of shiny metal soapbars, not quarter pounders or the like.

After I got back to Gainesville, I started jamming with a few bands. I had some friends in a band, two brothers who didn’t get along, and one of the brothers’ had to go. So my friend asked me, “Would you be into playing bass?” I went down to Lipham’s Music Store—where we used to hang out—and I borrowed a bass. Th en I got a hold of a little psychedelic substance and tripped out all night playing bass [laughs]. By morning, I went, “I’m a bass player!” Back in those days the bass wasn’t a romantic instrument. You really had to talk someone into playing bass.

Watched all 4hrs of the 'Running Down a Dream' documentary over this weekend. Ronald Edward Blair and his J basses featured prominently.

Duck Dunn is on Petty's only number one ...and the rhythm tracks (bass and drums together) only took two takes.

I was gonna mentioned stacked humbuckers for use in single coil slots for something like a Jazz Bass. I picked up my Carvin LB20 last night for the first time in a very long time and really enjoyed it. Didn’t plug it in, but I’d definitely consider something like stacked humbuckers for it if it ever goes back into regular rotation. Carvin even offered that as an option.

A little drive on the amp, the right eq and teqnique, and the geddy tone can happen on just about any bass. Fingers and gain structure

I've seen Geddy when his primary bass was a Ric, a Steinberger, a Wal, and a Jazz (perhaps others? No, I think those were all the major eras). The funny thing is, he always sounds like Geddy no matter what instrument he is playing. It is the combination of technique and signal processing.

And the P for the first album and peppered in to the second. I don't think he recorded with it after the "teardrop mod", but same result.
