I think that is a "thing" for some bassists. The guy from Korn has so much clank to his setting that it resembles the sound of a bag of marbles being shaken. I also like the strings low but hate the clank.
There is a point of deminishing returns.
I went from heavy handed to a much lighter touch through the years. But, at least for me, even the lightest touch with stupid low action doesn't always work out.
But lower is better then higher in my case.
