I will admit to using a little Carvin MB12 combo and MB15 extension cabinet for some gigs. Not all gigs require nuclear power. But, it sure is fun to be able to use a beast when it's appropriate. I play enough without FOH support that it makes having some excessive capacity necessary.

And that's "fun", for front-room practice whilst watching the TV, my Ashdown LB30, paired with the Barefaced One10.... but a SVT paired with 810, it is not!!!!!

Yep, you do, and I think a purple sparkle or some other outrageous looking lightweight cabinet would be a lot of fun to have and use for some kinds of gigs. But, you probably don't make them out to be equivalent to a 'fridge or a 360. They are different and serve a different function.

I happen to have room for a monster and a van to haul it. If those were not fact, then I would have some other kind of amplification, no doubt.

The advances in speaker tech have allowed us to shrink a big sound into a smaller box, which is what drove Dave Green to his initial designs and they work. At one time he considered doing what he considered an improvement on the Acoustic fridge concepts, but I don't think his heart was in it. I have a prototype for a sealed 218 in the shop but my sealed 118 (the cab I gig the most) is a tough enough sell. Many have decided an 18" based cab will be too 'boomy' or whatever without even listening. It also weighs about 53lbs, which apparently is WAY too heavy, apparently. I'm 55 years old and schlep it around three to 5 times a week no hassle, but maybe I'm in the minority these days. Also, as a one man, small operation, the huge cabs are a drag to ship. Super expensive to pack and ship and there's really not much demand for large format cabs anyway.

That said, I think a lot of modern gear has swung too far in the wrong direction for what I like about bass. Not enough personality with amps and basses in particular.

Those are cool! I've read about them before, plug that thing into your computer and you can turn choose individual pickup poles. Then save presets and choose them with the toggle switch. Pretty interesting stuff.

I went with "used-faux-boutique" stuff. I too moved large amps and cabs for many a year. I love 'em but things change.

If I had the $$ I would track down one of these:

I used this in a studio setting a couple of weeks ago and it was really nice! It is about as close "boutique" as I will ever get!

I think I need to walk away from the computer and go take a cold shower...... I've got the money I had put aside for an Epi Embassy Pro re-issue and the VP T'Bird burning a hole in my pocket....... But we still haven't had a sighting of either in Europe yet...... And no doubt there is likely to be even more temptation to spend it on something else, during the next couple of days....... C'mon Gibson and Epi..... I can only buy your product if it is actually available to purchase!!!!! Is anybody listening???????????

I sold my last bass in 1998 and had not had an amp for a while before that.

Starting again in 2015, I have had a couple of missteps* but I have never regretted spending the extra money on a serious half-fridge sized 212 cabinet (albeit a svelte 29kg) rather than the PF210 or PF115 I was considering at the beginning. The only thing I would change ... is getting a second 212.

*Class D heads are (relatively) cheap and you can just put a valve pre in front of them and they will be the business, right? Hah!

I think its a beautiful build. I do wonder about the pickup choice and location but it is not my bass so I don't really care what they did to it. The owner claims a lot of thought went into it so hopefully he ended up with what he was after. He seems very happy with it where i have seen his posts on Facebook.

My issue isn't with the build, its with the a$$hole that made the "abomination" comment underneath the article. It's a bass he has never and will never have the opportunity to try out but he knows it a piece of $#it because he is a genius and thus declared it to be garbage. I see all kinds of unattractive (to me) basses on that site on the custom build feature and never once has it occurred to me to let the owner know I think its an "abomination". I truly hate people that feel the need to crap all over someone else dream gear. Rant over.

I prefer focusing on what I do like. If someone loves something I don't, that's totally cool, and I have no desire to pee in anyone's cheerios

Well, my table manners would have prevented me calling it an "abomination", but there is something very strange about having the tremolo, and even stranger, tremolo and fretless....... I do get where that person is coming from. Tact is obviously not something at which he excels.....

Agreed. That comment on the build's page was wrong and I'd never do that but I'm sticking with my comment(here, not on his build's page) that the P/UP placement wasn't where I'd want it. That is not the conventional sweet spot for the way strings ring and IMO that bass will have a very subdued tone. I'd like to hear how it sounds to see what the client and builder have come up with.

My experience with the Ampeg PF500 was pretty miserable. Bought off eBay in a sealed box and used as a headphone amp until after the eBay return period ran out. Cabinet purchased, oh the power amp is rooted ... there's crack in the PCB ... that'll be $200 thanks ... sometime later it's cutting out randomly ... him indoors is away on Tyneside with his mam and dad and there's a beautiful valve amp for sale on OzBass. No more Class D for me.
