Thunderbird Club

I like the grain. How does Cypress compare, with regards to weight, to the more usual suspects? ie. mahogany, ash, alder.....
And heading into the realms of off-topic.... If I wanted to order from you, are you able to do what would need to be done with regard to CITES, for me to import it into the UK? ie. permits/documentation.

@JIO has an amber tort scratchplate on a Bird. Ummmm tort is not a standard material for Thunderbirds (she said very diplomatically).
Amber perhaps the closest thing to a red tortoise as for now. Haha :D

Tort on your 'Bird!?!?!?!?!? The style police do not forgive!
I know, I know! But I like the same combo on Jazz Bass (but never own one), so...

I wanted to do that very much but my bird's aesthetics flew a different route. GO for it and please post pics with attention to @kat888 attached. Thanks.
Need to age the tort to match a now slightly-worn body though! Or it will be too shiny :roflmao:

And here I always thought T-bird clubbers couldn't go out in daylight!
:)
(Didn't want to derail that thread.)
SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :speechless:

Haven't you watched Blade... 2, maybe it was 3. Point is, them vampires went out in daylight, but they were wearing motorcycle helmets with dark tinted lenses.
I guess I'd be more like Blade himself, half-breed, cause I do own a couple FSO's.... and am a Mopar fan (He has a '68 Charger, I have a '67, close enough)

which is...

I used money I didn’t really have to spare and bought a bass I couldn’t pass up :)

I was kinda hoping to lose the bid for money reasons, but just look at that bird I got! And the price? Couldn’t resist :)

Sorry... I was a bit taken aback! If I'd just bought a 2014 Gibson Thunderbird for 8 hunnerd bux... "Crap" is not the word I would use to describe my feelings (ESPECIALLY with the natural finish!)

I was at a loss for words!

Punk: LTD (Lonesome Town Drifters)
Doom: Howling Giant

Look 'em up. They're great.

Love both of those bands! Twen are one of my favorite new local bands. Sheep Shifter are rad too!

Congrats, and nice score - I dig that color scheme for 'birds...

Me too! Hoping I can get that pick holder thingy off without messing up the pg :)

That's one of the issues I have with tort. If you've seen the real stuff, by which I mean, "old" tort from the nitro days, rather than what passes for tort these days, "acrylic salami"..... You can take the shine off it, but it still looks like a cheap Chinese rip-off of the real thing.

I believe Spitfire makes nitro tort, if not nitro it's something very similar. They'll age it too, even make the indentations from the pup guard and tug bar on FSO's. Not sure if they'll make custom shapes. But their stuff is not cheap!! Couple hundred dollars IIRC

Their pickguards look amazing, but yeah...spendy!

Not familiar with Spitfire. Not really a tort fan at all. But having seen a few "vintage" Fenders with tort 'guards, what passes for tort these days, is kinda like comparing an obviously bad fake Rolex to the real thing. Sure it won't shrink and crack, but the colours and patterns are not a patch on "classic" tort. All I keep seeing is modern red salami and it makes me want to hurl. Whilst at least I can appreciate some beauty in vintage tort guard, even if I don't want to own a bass with a tort guard myself.

Yeah, that's probably the closest I've seen to "classic", but $200 for standard, $230 for relic..... Man, all I can afford is the $10 key fob! ;)

A Saunderbird to be exact! It's more like tort on acid... :cautious:

no, I'm not playing in my grama's living-room - but a hole-in-the-wall just off Market St. in SF. (note strap restraint that aids in eliminating neck-dive)

Funny, to many folks on TB, putting tort on anything is always the answer, to others it’s the worst thing to ever happen to a bass. I’m neither here nor there about it. Had an Oly White P bass with tort and loved it. I’ve even seen some natural wood Rippers with tort that look cool to me. I don’t currently have tort in any of my basses, but I’d rock a spitfire in a heartbeat. I put up five wall hangers on my wall for my main basses. Hoping to limit it to five for awhile. The ‘76 P bass is being sold and the T Bird is taking its place. I love my Gamma P bass, so it’ll hang around for awhile, at least. Kinda like having a P strung with flats and another with rounds, but my Gretsch strung with flats scratches that itch. We’ll see what comes of the Warmoth parts bass. At some point Jio is gonna give it a facelift and I’ll be running two Nordy Bigman pickups in it. That’ll be the closest thing to a modern sound I’ll have. For the most part, they coulda stopped making basses in the 70’s and I’d be perfectly happy :)

I'd say more along the lines of the offspring of a cheetah and a tortoise :roflmao: (there's a joke in there somewhere)
I'd assume acid was also involved, I can't see those two species mating without some kind of mind altering substance.

I’m assuming there’s a website for that very thing. Some freaky, specific stuff out there. Or so I’m told :/

Now, I can deal with the black/yellow guard, the red hats on black knobs on mirror guard....... But that head-stock..... It looks like a tortoise has chewed the end of it! ;) Cool bass, though!

With a Kubicki 9v pre under the hood it kicks serious T-bird booty! :bassist: When I 1st saw the NOS late 80's Saunders neck and studied the quality I took a chance buying it (for $80! a steal) Found out later Saunders was a failed start-up and these necks were made at the newly formed FCS as a commission. The exaggerated wood character, wacky hs shape and 70's sci-fi movie graphics coupled with a killer P-width neck has made it a favorite and it's hard not to rock-out playing it!

There are things in this world that are just PLAIN wrong...... Anyone with a surname that begins with 'T' and ends with 'P' being allowed on a ballot paper! Scratching your ass and then playin' your friends bass without washing your hands! Putting mayo (not ketchup) on fries! Putting tort anywhere near a 'Bird! What you get up to in your own basement with your 'Bird is none of my concern, but posting pictures in public of your 'Bird pimped in tort! Shame on ya!!!!!
Mayo on fries is another thing I don't understand.

Similar to tort on really anything, but especially a T-bird (although I make an exception for highly unusual colors of tort). Just.... why, when there are so many other options?

I’ve become a fan of non standard pg’s. @JIO made me one recently for my Drake bass. Now, all I want is custom, one off designs from him! Same goes for that body style he did for me. Kinda familiar, but one of a kind
