That’s great info, thanks! The bass on Love is the Drug is pretty dang great too!
It’s chemistry...can’t really predict that. When me and my buddy Harlowe started Prayer Flags, it was super conceptual. I had the whole thing in my head. The original lineup was two bass players, two drummers who added minimal parts to drum machine beats and guitar. In my head it was brilliant. Got a bunch of great, like minded players together and started rehearsing. It was pretty terrible. Nothing like the sound in my head. Me and Harlow started just jamming along with drum machines and recording just the two of us. Way better, but still not there. At some point, Harlowe brought in a drummer pal of his who was visiting from Australia. He put drums over our stuff and we threw away nearly all of the electronic stuff except some synths I played. Now it was pretty close. I ran into an old buddy who plays a single neck 12 string pedal steel. He’s played for a lot of creative bands (Lambchop, Calexico, Iron and Wine, currently Justin Townes Earle). I asked him to listen to our stuff and see how it would fit. I love the results and you’d never know most of it is pedal steel.
The point being, I came up with an elaborate concept and it kinda sucked. Once we just got talented friends and let them do what they do, we came up with a sound none of us could’ve planned on our own
