Thunderbird Club

So, got bored last night, decided to do some mockups of the new Epi if I decided to convert it to a II.

Most interesting I thought was when I did an overlay of the original II on top of the Epi. The photo angle for both isn't quite the same, but it's the closest I could find, and I resized it so the frets match on both necks, as well as center widths.

Is this what any of you with the Epi and an original Gibson in hand have noticed?

Yes, side-by-side they're all quite different. The original '60s differs from the '70s and so on. The Epiphone Classics and Vintage have a different lower 'bout.

Totally understood, if it winds up being the case with the Traynor, it'd be the 400+ for me, if i were in your shoes.

It might be my all time favorite amp, so I tend to agree :)
Even going all tube again is purely selfish. All my gigs seem to be well received with what I already have, amp wise. My 6SL7 pre and power amp is fantastic sounding, but sometimes I want something a little less squeaky clean.

Sounds like you got the perfect amp to experiment with pre-amp tubes!!

Maybe so! I can see a lot of potential for a smaller amp like this. Especially recording

My local L&M has an embassy pro in stock. I had a very brief look at it last night. I had all of about 60s with it, so I couldn't form much of an impression. But, if I were to get on, the very first thing would be replacing those knobs. They just look so cheap.

I returned mine for various reasons, but the knobs were kinda cheesy. There’s cool, 60’s cheese and there’s just cheap cheese. I don’t remember being too put off by em, but yeah

This is the proper way to warm up a solid state amp. Meisha takes care of that as soon as I enter her home.

Yeah, I do recall the Classics were a different shape. It strikes me as a little odd, as Gibson certainly has the dimensions for the originals or at least the means to get them, I wonder why they go with different shapes, especially like this where the Classic and VP have different lower bout. If they were going to reshape the VP from the classic, why not shape it like the original?

I honestly cant tell by looking at them, maybe it's ergonomics? Idk

2 w/ KT88’s. Honestly, I don’t know enough about those amps to know the difference :)

The earlier model with 6550s in the poweramp had an autobias circuit which was (supposedly) a pain in the bum (my YBA200 has been modded to remove this). This was deleted for the YBA200-2. A 5751 would be a option for V1.

I have read very negative reviews of the head, but it wasn't clear whether the authors were au fait with the *complexities* of a passive tone stack, ie 'flat' is 2-10-2, if you run 'everything at noon' you are going to get a scooped tone for sure. Max out the mid control and use the range control to tune the frequency point. I like Range on minimum and the bass maxed out to give a gentle bass/low-mid boost. I found a schematic online and fed the values into the tone stack calculator -- to my great surprise/amusement it confirmed that that is exactly what my settings are doing. This seems to work well with the SVT212AV which rolls off below 70Hz. There is also Resonance which controls the overall 'tightness' -- off = 'modern' and maxed = 'vintage'. Turn it up and you get a pillowy, boomy effect and the notes really bloom. When I first had the head I maxed it but after a while it was just silly, so it's down at noon now. Into your 1822 at volume, you might want it off altogether.

Much better Dylan. I really don't think I will be able to resist the impulse to do exactly that.

Thanks, Kat! By the time it gets to me, I’ll probably ask again :)

So you have a sealed cab as well? Mine starts to roll off a bit lower (-3db at 63hz), but close enough

No, it's reflex ('ported') but James Miller Esq said somewhere here it's about as close to a fridge as you can get without having a fridge.

I bought mine because I wanted a 4Ω 212.

RMS Power Handling: 600 Watts
Frequency Response (-3dB): 71 Hz -18 kHz
Usable Low Frequency (-10 dB): 40 Hz
Nominal Impedance: 4 Ohms
Sensitivity: 99 dB
Maximum SPL: 127 dB

Agreed, I think this just looks right. I was thinking about tracking down another Greco TB-II so I can have them in different colors, but if I'm going to repaint them anyways, why not just remove the pup and move the jack on a VP? Maybe wait until they start popping up used, and I can have a II in every color of the rainbow. Or at least in Green, Red, and White.

I had it in my head those were sealed. I’ve heard nothing but good reports on that particular cab.
