It's alive! The P-Bird is making noise now. I had forgotten a critical piece of grounding, which made for a brief head scratching session and wondering whether it was something I screwed up or the little Valve Junior amp I plugged into blowing up after the abuse it's been subjected to. It was my screw up. Problem solved, and it sounds like a Precision. A quick setup and the intonation is good enough for jazz. Not 100% perfect, but I could mess with it for a whole lot longer and get only a little closer until the weather changes again anyway. Action is where I like it. I don't do only a dime under the strings low, because I have hands like a lower primate and need some clearance.
It's still missing a few things - pickup screws and springs (doh!) and strap buttons/locks. It will be getting Loxx. Whoever suggested those has my thanks. I like 'em. Strings are coated rounds I had lying around. I have forgotten what they are. I don't think they are DRs, but maybe. They are red, which would be appropriate if they matched the paint better. They will wear out and it will get Cobalt Flats, most likely.
So, what do the pickups sound like? Hard to say what with the pickup height completely random and through a Valve Junior instead of a bass amp. But, I can say it sounds exactly like a P. Lots of midrange, no scoop, nothing nasal about it at all. It's a drier, browner sound than a Thunderbird, and that's exactly what it's supposed to be. More parts and then I need to buff out the body to make it look far better than it does. Probably should have done that before assembly, but I couldn't wait to find out what it was going to sound like. I'm certainly happy enough with it.
