That sounds pretty cool. According to James Miller Esq, TalkBass Ampeg endorser extraordinaire, the SVT212AV also nails the scaled down fridge thing. Certainly beats having a giant box blocking access to another three shelves in the bookcase.

Well, that doesn't work here, because my flatback 810 is lurking anyhow, with the blackline SVT atop it, giving me dirty looks...
Ive tried the 212AV (admittedly not in a gigging environment) and I was less than impressed. It seemed bottom-heavy, while the SVT48HE sounded like an 810 from jump. While it certainly doesn't lack for lows, it still has that "smack" that is characteristic of an Ampeg 810. The surprising part is that it has everything I dislike - ports, a tweeter and polypropylene 8s - yet it sounds like the real thing. Ya coulda knocked me over with a feather.

That's interesting and may explain the differences in perception between me and Mark in the Traynor bottom end department. It was years since I had any sort of cab and there were none to try locally ... I wasn't spoiled for choice with 4Ω 212s either, it was the SVT212AV or nothing really.

It did arrive from Melbourne no less, in less than 24hrs, which was impressive (I mail-ordered my TCE tuner from a shop which is an hour away on the train and it took a week to arrive).

Those SVT48HEs look funky and you're right, there's not a lot out there about them.

Those SVT48HEs look funky and you're right, there's not a lot out there about them.

I have tons of Ampeg literature, catalogs and the like - none of them show the SVT48HE. The Ampeg website, which typically has good resources for manuals, etc for discontinued product, has nothing either.

BTW, does yours weigh a ton also? Compared to my Classic IV Pro, the Studio is hefty.

Blixa is pretty prentious and often unpleasant, but I love his voice and you can spot it a mile away. Great song!

I rest my case

I've heard two I really like,but I prefer a pair of 15s every time. Not more lows or any of that (maybe less actually), I'm just under the impression they have a particular character- if they're good drivers in a suitable box.

I’ll take a good 215 over a 410 every time for lots of reasons. Some are nerdy reasons like off axis dispersion.

412s on the other hand ... last one of those I played through was just mental. Stoopid loud as well with a 100W head.

Lots of high sensitivity speakers are the only way to fly with low powered heads!

That looks terrific and a great price! Congrats!!! Funny, you’re afraid you’re gonna regret it. I passed on a cherry Studio for $750 with the case and hope I don’t regret it!

All y'all need to stop talking about Sunns. Trust me, they are TOTALLY not worth it in any way. Just leave them alone, and I'll be 'round to collect them and take them off whatever unfortunate soul's hands they've come to burden. It's very simple. Scott has Hiwatts, I have Sunns, everyone else can fight it out over the rest.

I joined Talk Bass when I was living and working in China. No one believed they could ever make anything of quality. When I moved back to the States and joined LBO the outright racist crap I read about Chinese stuff surprised me but only a little. Pretty funny how the tune has changed.

Hey, I'm just as prejudiced. My YBA 300 was a POC in the 70s. The "reissue" a few years ago was also one judging from what I've read. Why after four (5?) decades of manufacturing was the first gen YBA 200 so problematic?

Ampeg's PF500 fiasco has put me off the brand after owning around ten of their previous products. I don't blame the country of manufacture. I blame whoever owns the company for poor QC and design. And myself for trusting what used to be a brand that meant quality no matter what you thought of the sound.

So, yeah, Bugera. Why not?

I think a lot of the country of origin issues/bias are dropping by the wayside more and more. The new stuff that comes out just seems to get better and better all the time. I don't think people under 35 had the same experience with crappy beginner gear that we had growing up. Aside from some of the thick plastic feeling finishes on most new guitars and basses I try, there is very little to complain about and most of that just comes down to personal taste.

I always blame the manufacturer instead of the country of origin. I think many companies use cheap parts and figure if it dies under warranty, who cares? Just send a replacement that cost almost nothing to produce. Ampeg still gets by on their history but some recent history has damaged that image IMO. Unlike Duke I like my SVT3Pro and its an older US model but I wouldn't buy another one. Lots of other options out there now.

Oddly enough, when i was in London and Scotland, it somehow seemed natural that way. Had no issue at all. But my cousin on the other hand, almost got us killed.
