Thunderbird Club

@dukeorock - great sound clips! Just got a chance to run them through my GK 210 practice rig. Surprising how similar the first two sound. All three sound great but the third (with the BB strings) is noticeably more laid back in the mix and slightly more mid focused where as the other two seem to have a broader tone with more top and slightly more bottom end (at least to my ears).

With that in mind I would think the Cataldo and older bird would be perfect for songs where you want the bassline to stand out a bit more, the BB strung bird may be a better fit for a more supportive background and less flash role.

Here's my golden standard for a very forward bassline. Keep in mind this is a David Gilmour song, which means people typically tune into it to hear David (not the bass player). The first time I heard it my initial thought was the bass is walking all over Gilmour, I'm surprised he let that happen - but I like it.

Would love to hear the Cataldo or your early bird on this song.

Man, I owned that record a very long time ago and had forgotten all about it! Oddly, I’ve often played that guitar riff at home and wondered where I’d gotten it from :)

That strong mid content in the BB strings is something I like a lot. A little eq can also go a long way with any of those setups, but I didn’t touch a thing. Tried to match levels, but didn’t obsess over it, clearly :)

It was insanely cool of Carlo to let me try two different Thunderbuckers as I was on the fence about which one I wanted. I think I’m still on the fence, but pretty sure I’m going with the ‘66.
At some point you gotta just commit and keep moving.

I think that’s all a tad overstated, guys! Got lucky on a couple basses and maybe an amp! When I contacted Carlo and asked where the ‘Make Offer’ option was on the Cataldo site...well, I can’t repeat his response on this family friendly site
I'm still going to give you credit for the magic touch and repeat the mantra "dukeofrock" every time I put in a lowball offer. You are officially a legend. Enjoy the exalted status!

At least I'm a higly trained ICU and Recovery nurse with 32 years of experience in those fields - That oughtta count for something in that regard... ;)
It means I'm headed to Denmark if I ever need serous surgery. That way a fellow 'Bird Brain can do the hacking and cutting. I can't think of a more foolproof plan.

Wondering...how many ‘Bird owners also own Rics?
In this era of scooped mids, those seem like two bassses where the mids are very aggressive. A Ric 4005 is one of the coolest looking basses of all time, IMO

The 4005 used to be the other bass I wanted (apart from the 4001/3). Rare and expensive and no longer on my list. I left Ric Land and I'm never going back.

Legendarily cheap! Though, by the time I chrome out my ‘02 Gibson, it’ll be much closer to a ‘normal’ price.

The Cobalts were brand spankin new when I recorded that...didn’t warm up, or play on em at all...straight to recording, so yeah, pretty bright for flats. Played a gig with em last night. They’re a very different kind of string, for sure
They DO break in fairly quickly.
