Yeah, I hear you. Besides personal opinions on strings, how do ones like Rotosound cost there since they're English and not American?

The same, maybe slightly more ... if you can find them. No one stocks them. The Bass Centre in Melbourne says the RS66 list price is $AUD117, but offers a 'discounted' price of about half that.
 
Ribbon cable! I know right!? The biasing would be causing excessive breakup (and burning through your output valves).

Seems so. Yeah, ribbon cables are just born to fail on a fairly regular basis.
Only tried the Traynor through a very awful sounding cab at the shop, but there is a noticeable improvement in clean headroom, so that’s a start :)

We were standing in the showroom at a gigantic home furnishing and electronics retailer the other day (rhymes with 'hardly normal' or 'harvey knobhead') doing our periodic 'what shall we get when our telly dies' reconnaissance (13 years and still going strong). A young salesman was trying to sell us on the virtues of one of those paper thin wall mount tellies -- 'look everything connects via this tiny ribbon cable!' Where he sees cutting edge fantabulousness, I see a flimsy cat chew toy.
 
I paid a bloke to enlarge the pickup cavities on my ex PRO IV ... and felt sick when eventually I saw how little wood he had removed for the price, ie a millimetre or so. Use a Dremel and some masking tape and do it yourself. You could use pickup rings as a guide.
I just use a sharp chisel to do that kind of thing. A wide, sharp chisel is more accurate and cleaner, at least for me.

Having been into the guts of a few computers and found ribbon cables, I don't have that much fear of them. The first time I got into one, I did an upgrade, with my then 5 year old son "helping." If those can survive something like that, they can survive lots of things. Cats? Maybe not. The computer lasted as long as you can expect a computer to last. It was obsolete and had to be replaced because it was uselessly slow witted far before it quit working.

Yeah, ribbon cables should be used for what they are meant for; Bussing low voltage logic or supply rails. In tube amps they create a myriad of problems including weird crosstalk artifacts and others. The other problem is manufacturers cut cost on the PCB mounted connectors for these and instead wire the ribbons directly into the PCB. What ends up happening is intermittent connections after awhile due to the 90 or more degree angles the wires are subjected to during final assembly. I have seen excellent designs from highly reputable manufacturers hindered by using these in their interconnect.
