Thunderbird Club

A couple of questions have been answered. I was wondering if it's a humbucker and if so, if it may have infringed on Gibson's EB-0/1/2/3 humbucker design. The other question was how does it compare to the Gibson mudbucker. Physiscally it looks like it could fit a Gibson (EB-0/1/2/3) bass with no alteration to the guitar..

A Gibson 'mud-bucker' is a sidewinder. As far as I'm aware, neither company holds TM's on their pu designs. (split-coils, singles, HB'rs) A hum-bucker is a hum-bucker regardless of what bass it's on. Not certain if the Fender bucker is the exact same size as a Gibson sidewinder but it is close. (and both are heavy)

Back to shiny boxes for a moment. The Bass Soul Food, the one with four knobs, a switch and a black label, got here yesterday, and I plugged it in last night. Signal chain was upright > wireless > fDeck > Soul Food > ToneHammer > Carvin MB12 combo. Nothing Bird-like about it, but it's what I have been doing most, with the exception of the fuzz/overdrive/whatever pedal. I found that cranking up the dirt on the Soul Food boosted the mids in a way that made it a bit nasal sounding if you don't bias the tone part of the circuit away from treble. Cranked all the way up, it's not quite fuzz, but it well into distortion territory. Comments about how it can fatten up the sound are right on. It's under the top when compared with a pedal like the Bass Fog or Big Muff. I probably won't have a chance to use it with a Thunderbird through an ACC amp for a while, but I can see how it would really help with some of the higher register disappearance issues that I have noticed and that Mantis Tobaggan had a whole thread about.

The right strap fixes all kinds of neck dive as well. I'm guessing you didn't use that wide, comfy strap in your profile pic with the EB-3. ;)
Nope. The wide strap in the pic stays on the 'Bird. As a matter of fact,ALL my straps stay on their respective basses(except the 5 string Epi'Bird which has a different locking doodad[tech term]):D That way the strap holes don't waller(good Southern word)out and come off when least expected. Guess how I discovered THAT!:bawl:

If I could make it to 50% Bootsieness, it would be a banner day. Oh, well. I'll only get to about 25%, if even that much, and that's only because I can tolerate polyester for a while.

On a good day, I can only achieve 10% Bootsieness. So, you are way ahead of me. But, if I had one of his hats, I could probably reach 20% Bootsieness.

I need some Marshall stacks to get out of single digit Lemminess.

Ok, thanks. Sounding really stupid now....never heard the term sidewinder...what is it and how does it relate to a humbucker?

Sidewinder is a humbucker. The coils are vertical and perpendicular to the strings, with the pole pieces parallel to the strings in the middle. Rails are sidewinders. So are mudbuckers. I think a large number of Thunderbird pickups are also sidewinders, but I'm not sure. You see what look like pole pieces sticking out of a mudbucker, but really, those aren't like the pole pieces you see coming out of a Fender pickup, Gibson PAF, or P-90.

Here's a more standard issue, non-sidewinder humbucker design:

We, yes all of us, need to see at least 5 pics of that '67 well lit from different angles. Chop chop! :)
OK. Pics have been taken-not great but should look OK on TB. Now I just need to figure out the best way to upload 'em. Full disclosure: Tech wise I'm easing my way into the"new"century. I'm up to about 2003 +/-.:):help:

Very Cool. Thank you. I would think the sidewinder sits lower than the std bucker...
Regardless, thanks again!

Did you take them with your phone? If so, when you next post, use the upload file option on the reply options, it will take you to pics on your phone, select and upload.

I joined the 20th century last week. The 21st century has a ways to wait before I get there.
