When I was in the army, I took careful aim at the dumb rules and went about fixing them. I asked friends at other units to initiate complaints so that I could make changes happen. But the best was the monthly finance meeting; it always ended with the Deputy Commanding Officer asking for questions. He would cringe when the preamble to my question was "Sir, as a taxpayer..." I also saved $1mm on an $11mm annual budget.

But the most fun is in making the bureaucratic machinery grind its own gears.

In the 90s, in the interest of political correctness, all orders had to be inclusive. To make life easy, a page was inserted into the hundreds of binders of rules and regulations that each unit was required to keep stating that in keeping with language convention, wherever the male was used, it was to be understood to include females. Well, doesn't someone launch a human rights complaint and the result was that every page that contained the male had to be replaced with both male and female (he/she) - so every page. So I launched a complaint that the section of the medical orders that dealt with pregnancy specified only the female and as much as I was not biologically able to have a baby, the army was abrogating my human rights to have a baby. It was very Monty Python.

Customs prick was more than a little suspicious of my lack of baggage. Dude, I'm here for three days and then I'm going back to civilisation, cool your jets.
Customs was NOT happy when I drove to Boston for an amp in under 24 hours.... or he just thought I was an idiot... still got a good deal even with the money spent on gas driving my old station wagon.
