Thunderbird Club

Ouch... Not so good a price after all... :(
I'm surprised that the hot rod shop is cheaper than the pro-refinisher. Warmoth has a clear advantage in this scenario, but between the 2 custom shops, I wouldn't hesitate to use the hot rod shop. I think it'd be completely badass to have a Thunderbird dolled up with a finish reminiscent of customized fuel tank on a motorcycle:cool:

Hard to do better than that for an obnoxiously blingy finish.

The next question is does it want a nice slab of pearloid on it, or no PG for maximum in your face fuschia flake eye-ache?
It depends on the pearloid. If it's holographic mother of toilet seat that's so outrageous even Bootsy Collins would think twice, then the answer is yes, it wants that. If it's not outrageous enough, it depends on how blingy the fuchsia on the rest of the body is.

I'm inclining towards no pickguard and a chrome control plate. Ashtrays are a step too far for me I'm afraid mate. Lollipops for sure.

I really dig the retro vibe of pearloid, but no pickguard would be much more in yer face. If you pay all that money for a bling finish, might as well show it off.

Hipshot A type Fender mount seems to be the go.
Ashtrays and no pickguard would be outstanding. It would make absolutely no sense and look fantastic.

Hey Thunderbird lovers. I currently own a Gibson Tbird in cherry finish, and I'd love to add another one. I'd really like to have a Blackbird or a Nikki Sixx Bird with the maple wings, but sadly they're just not out there. I'm looking on ebay, and I'm wondering, why are there SOOO many Thunderbirds there from Japan? I mean, like 90% of the Birds on eBay are from Japan. What's the deal? are they legit? It just worries the crap out of me to bid on them. Any insight?
I don't know exactly, but my understanding is that many of those are the same instrument. Somebody in Japan is checking to see if there's somebody dumb enough to pay extra, I guess.

Most (if not all) of those japanese Thunderbirds are legit - But in general too expensive to be worth it, when adding shipping and taxes to the price, and the risk of having it damaged in transit.

Also, a lot of those japanese sellers are brokers selling the same bass at different prices - If you check the pictures on the ads, you will notice how they all seem to have identical pictures of the basses.

Personally I wouldn't buy one this way, but if you want something bad enough... ;)

What kind of bass are you going to build?
I got done with this one about a month ago. Bartos, Barto preamp, Badass Bass II and Schallers. Plays unbelievable.

Whatever the final tab is, if it sucks, you're stuck with a club.

Good question.
Until you lot started posting pics of Les Pauls again this morning I was thinking of a couple of posh birds. Mahogany body and through neck but with the face of the body veneered in Macassar Ebony finished with a black burst to hide the veneer edge. Gold hardware, bound neck worth real MOP inlay. Now you’ve got me off on a black Les Paul again

Then it's decided! You'll be needing both!;)

Love the sound of that.
