The VP is now fully equipped with Rotosound 77 50-110 flats. I’ve only had a quick play on them so far as the kids are asleep, but I like them. They feel great to the touch, and they’ve tamed some of the wilder clunkier aspects of the bass quite a lot. The sound is much warmer but still has bite.
I’ll let them bed in a bit and see how they are at rehearsal on Monday when I can crank it a bit.

Thx. That's my minimum. The Roto flats I tried to put on mine ended up with a little over one wrap and it didn't hold tune very well. I have Roto 77 flats on some of my other basses and they're great strings, not quite as bright as Chrome flats and not nearly as bright as Cobalt flats. The string change goal with my VP was to weed out the clack and sizzle of the stock strings without losing the aggressive personality of the bass. So far I'm happy with the Cobalt flats but I have a set of Roto round nickels that I might give a try if I want a bit more zing.

The cobalt flats on my '91 took a little while to break in. They didn't sound that good to begin with, but once broken in, they had a good 'Bird sound, with plenty of brightness, but with the top-end zing smoothed off. The ugly pointy orange-ness of them got more burnished. They seem to be keeping that sound for a very long time. That's with Chinabuckers. All bets are off when that bass gets a different set of pickups. I really ought to try some Cobalt Flats on the '15. That might work spectacularly well.

@Chucky Stiletti - here's a pic of my Super Reverb. I assume it's a reissue but don't have a clue what year it was made. I got it used in trade from somebody that didn't play guitar, he got it as payment for some plumbing work he did for a guitarist. It plays great, any idea how to date this beast?

FenderBird, '55 style. DiMarzio Jazz in the bridge can, '63 ThunderBucker in the neck position. Shaved to Jazz width at the nut. Awaiting a heavy relic CAR finish. That's showbiz!
There should be a stamp under the amp housing.
