I've been characterizing Tbird pickups. For me, I had read the the TB 66s were an exact replica of those built by Gibson at that time. I have the TBs in my BaCH NR. For comparison's sake I tried my BaCH against my 68 single pickup NR with the back pickup rolled off on the BaCH and they sound nothing alike. Same strings (D'Addario XL105s), same amplifier settings and still a huge difference. It becomes clear to me (not surprisingly) that this is not a very scientific test as too many variables (I call them knobs) exist.
I have now managed to collect a decent sample population that includes;
2013 Gibson Humbuckers
1976 Gibson Sidewinders
XX66 Thunderbuckers
1968 Gibson Humbucker
I measured all of these for DC resistance Rdc, Inductance (extrapolated) L and parasitic capacitance Cp.
I am now in the process of AC sweeping these samples to determine their AC Bandwidth response.
For now, I'm using Peter Hiscocks' method (attached) but using a discreet siggen and a dual trace 20MHz analog scope.
Since I may have access to an Audio Precision APx511 analyzer I fugerd I use this approach prior to considering the Syscomp CGR-101 Hiscocks is marketing by way of the attached document. Regardless, I will use some type of automated data capture as I don't want to do tabulate manually with Excel. His Lissajous pattern approach is by no means novel but very effective for this. Once I'm done with the initial set of measurements, and assuming the data looks consistent, I may move to a Driver Coil to go more full circle.
